This study tries to explore a plan for educating foreign learners while dealing with lexical education by analyzing the properties of Korean based on the process of foreign language acquisition. While confirming that the influence of mother tongue on language acquisition, we examine lexical education of the Korean language.
Discussing the influence of mother tongue on language acquisition, the first chapter investigates the meaning shift and interference that appear in foreign language acquisition, errors due to letter-to-letter translation, learners' methods of building vocabulary in learning, and contents of teaching methods through them.
The second chapter applies what we have dealt with in the first chapter to lexical education at large. We examine an educational plan, and practice of, for lexical semantic relations including hyponymy, antonyms, synonyms, homonymy, and onomatopoeic words, and an educational approach that uses a graphic organizer as utilization of these. Then, we look at an educational plan, and actual cases of, for words' morphological relations including derived words and compound words. Lastly, we present an educational method for Sino-Korean words and borrowed words except inherent Korean words on the side of lexical typology. As for lexical typology, we concentrate on the method rather than educational practices.
The third chapter, as cultural education through Korean vocabularies, investigates expressions for various situations. That is to say, we examine education of culture contained in words by investigating (1) education of different usages in accordance with situations or the distance between the speaker and the hearer for teaching the way of applying culture; (2) education of differences in words' symbolisms for teaching words whose meaning are different in different countries; (3) education of color words for teaching the way to understand Korean people's thoughts contained in colors; (4) education of kinship words that make us think about Koreans' family-orientedness; (5) and education of words with certain origins that enable us to understand what origins the words have.
