Language is means by which human beings are able to maintain social life and create, develop and take over culture. We have our own precious cultural asset, 'Hangeul'. But, foreign languages that pollute and push away Korean language are being increased. Furthermore, as the information and communication tech-based communication is being diversified, the use of correspondence language is being increased, and correspondence words destroying a linguistic standard is actually being used. This study analyzed the actual use of language of the children in the first grade that is important period for linguistic formation, and groped for the teaching plan to refine Korean language.
In consideration of the theory of this study, Hangeul was pushed out of Chinese due to the historical conditions, and polluted by Japanese. Now it is being nudged out of English. Recently the correspondence language is being widely used, such as transformation and contraposition of vocabulary like omission, abbreviation and addition, writing letters according to their pronunciation like Arabic figures and Roman characters' shape, abbreviated work, cryptology, onomatopoeia, mimesis, exclamation including change of meaning, especially imoticon. The correspondence language even brings linguistic discontinuation between generations.
In consideration of the reality, it is necessary to refine Korean language in order to develop Korean and linguistic culture suggested in the educational process of Korean language department. Korean refinement education must be completed, such as trimming native language, transferring borrowed words into our native ones, changing vulgar language to nice words, correcting wrong words to the standard language, writing according to orthography.
In order to analyze the actual use of language, this study surveyed the picture diary, computer communication language data, linguistic data of surrounding environment, and recorded data of the first grade in an elementary school.
First, it examined on the wrong use of language. The most errors were in spacing words. Besides, there were mistakes such as writing as sounded not according to usage, repeating or mixing up signs, confusing similar vocabularies, writing wrong tense and honorific in many cases.
Second, it examined on the use of loanword. Picture diary showed 50% of frequency in use. Lots of loanwords were frequently used not only in writings but also in pictures. In order to find out the loanwords widely used, this study researched the extent of using loanword intended for children's clothing and school supplies. The finding showed that the loanword is being used overwhelmingly more than Korean.
Third, it examined on the abuse of vulgar language. As the result of surveying recorded data, it is widely used in our daily life. To the questions intended for children, the majority of them answered that vulgar language ran counter to Korean refinement, and 59.1% of them were using it more than once a day. Vulgar language is being widelyused between friends and learned from them. Learned words are being repeated from habit. The finding confirmed again that Korean refinement education is required for those who are in the first step.
Fourth, it examined on the use of computer correspondence language. Internet world generated a great number of correspondence language users. It is characterized by abbreviating syllable, omitting and using communication sign. Since it is being used by even the first grade children, guidance for correspondence language is required.
Based on the above-stated actual conditions, this study has groped for a teaching plan to refine Korean language of the first grade children in an elementary school.
First, teaching through formation of environment. In order to make children feel coexistence with Hangeul, as establishing 'Hangeul school', selecting and complimenting children who use Hangeul in a correct way as 'Hangeul corrector', the project selected those who passed ten steps of Hangeul questions in order, made fitting for the level of the first grade, as 'Best user of Hangeul'. It was effective to make them have interest in Hangeul.
Second, it groped for Korean refinement lesson as reorganizing curriculum of Korean language department. The level of learning Korean language was reorganized based on the actual conditions of children. It resulted in using vocabulary according to orthography, reducing use of loanword or vulgar language, along with honorific mistake according to situation.
Third, as applying a document of 'Hangeul keeper', it attempted to lesson Korean refinement connecting to home. It prepared for a chance to be interested in Korean refinement and talk about it at home or community, out of school.
Fourth, it guided computer correspondence language. As the result of focusing on the manner of correspondence language rather than the functional aspect, by reorganizing annual plan for discretional activity, the attitude toward the correspondence language has been changed.
This study tries to request a broadcasting station to produce a Korean-related program and arrange it at prime time in order to let all the family members watch the program, to create social atmosphere for Korean refinement, as the part of teaching refined Korean.
Language is a nerve and vein that make linguistic community exist. As letting Hangeul tower high as a global cultural language by renewing and refining precious Hangeul, in order to allow people to use only Hangeul, continual effort should be needed.
