This thesis begins with the proposition that English loan words can be helpful to English studies if it is possible to transcribe so that the original pronunciation is retrievable.
There is a flood of English loan words in our everyday life, due to the progress of an information-oriented and ever-globalizing society. Our country also has had great interest in English education and invest a amount of national and human resources in English education. In this sense of current trend in English education, English loan words could be an one of the effective resources in learning English. That is, if English loan words are transcribed following a standard English pronunciation, especially in context of communication in English, it could have a positive influence on developing English communication. To this end, it would be advisable to have English loan words transcribed into Hangeul(the Korean alphabet) in such a way that the phonetic form of the English word is preserved as closely as possible, although perfect correspondence can not be impossible between the phonetic forms of English and the Hanguel writing system.
This thesis is about wrong Hanguel transcriptions of English loan words, especially focusing on transcriptions of vowels of English loan words. Thus, this study examined and analyzed the Hanguel transcription of English loan words case by case.
The result of this study is as follow. With respect to the transcription of vowels, the major problem is that English vowels are transcribed in a one-to-one correspondence with their English spelling, which leads Korean learners to pronounce words in English such a way that they are unrecognizable to native speakers. There is a considerable variation between English pronunciation and spelling of the English vowels 'a/e/i/o/u', but some of them are transcribed ‘ㅏ/ㅔ/ㅣ/ㅗ/ㅜ’ respectively in Korean. Therefore, it can be recommended that loan words be spelled in Hanguel in such a way as to reflect as closely as possible their pronunciation in Standard English, particularly in English speaking context.
This study has suggested that not only the examination of the issues discussed above relating to the transcription of loan words need to be checked in further depth at the highest levels, but also steps need to be taken to regularize the transcription of loan words, both purposes of systematicity and for the contribution which such a regularization could contribute to the learning of English by Koreans. Most previous studies of loan word transcription have only been done from the perspective of their possible representaion in the Korean language and have not taken the impact on English education into account. This study will hopefully provide an impetus to further studies on the transcription of loan words and in the near future, in English speaking context, more accurate pronunciation of these words will be commonplace in Korean schools, which could enhance the learning of English.
