Since the 1970 there have been active research efforts as well as diverse methodology in investigating the poems by Jeong Ji-yong. The studies on his works are wide in scope and diverse in kinds today, when it's necessary to reconsider the value of his poems. Understanding the need, this study set out to analyze his poems, investigate them in terms of the changing aspects of his poetic world and characteristics of his poetic words, and to understand their implications in the history of Korean poetry.
The changes to his poetic world were examined according to the early, middle, and later days. In the early days his poems were characterized by 'love for family and consciousness of loss,' the latter of which was expressed in the emotional appeal of the Korean people that lost their homes. The implications were found in the aspects of ideology in his poems. In the middle period, the 'sensationalism and Catholicism' were the dominating words. His remarkable sensitivity, original expressions, and minute composition were especially assured in the works of imagism. Those aspects of modern poetry were hardly found in other poets of the days, which implied a lot for the history of Korean poetry. Although he failed to reach the intended level of faith in his religious poems, it's important to notice that his religious poems first explored Catholicism in Korea's modern poems. In the later days he pursued 'Oriental mentality through the world of mountains.' The works from those days not only enriched the internal features of the Korean poetry but also presented new and fresh methods in that he expressed his desired mental world through suggesting a touching scene rather than crude bleaching of ideas. It's where his roles in the history of Korean poetry were highlight.
The poetic words in his works were analyzed. As a result, he made a wide and free use of new words, archaic words, and dialects coming from native or standard words and being altered. In particular, he adopted diverse groups of native words, dialects, Chinese words, and foreign words in the early days, since when he increasingly searched for archaic words for his poems. The change has something to do with the changes to his poetic consciousness. It seemed that there were many foreign and Chinese words in his early works because they featured exotic themes. During the later days he wanted to use archaic words according to the purpose of depicting the classical precision beauty of mountains. Other than those absolutely necessary cases, he never used Chinese words, which proves that how much perceptive he was of poetic words in different atmospheres and meanings of a poem and how good he was at altering and making use of them. The result was his use of more diverse and rich poetic words including archaic words unlike other poets depending on Chinese words, which implies much for the history of Korean poetry.
Considering those findings, it's convinced that Jeong had marked skills of embellishing language in poetry and made a revolutionary contribution to the shift from romanticism accompanied by self-expressions in the 1920s to imagism of depiction in the 1930s. His unique poetic words and depiction well deserve the high praise and adoration.
