This research is an anlytical study on the linguistic styles of sports broadcasting programs in Korea. The concept of linguistic styles presume a stability or consolidation of the sports broadcasting genre whereas the sports broadcasting language is always changing and is an ongoing process. The linguistic styles of the sports broadcasters and commentators in the sports programs not only shape the viewer's discourse of the sports games but also influence the viewers' everyday language usages.
Thus, linguistic styles that differentiate one program genre from another and identify a program boundary should be understood as the integration of the sports broadcasting rules, codes, customs, etc. which are, from a dynamic point of view, still struggling to be patterned.
Three research questions are reviewed in this study and the result of each research questions are as follows: Firstly, what is the linguistic styles of sports programs in the dimension of expression? The study result shows the overuse of the terms in foreign languages, the use of a rhetorical flourish, and Chinese words and expression. Secondly, what is the linguistic styles of sports programs in the dimension of content? The study result reveals the use of war and combat words, the semantic categorization, and over-lexicalization. Thirdly, what is the linguistic styles of sports programs in the dimension of pregmatics? The study result shows the linguistic patterns of phonetic fortes, the pronunciation of the vowel /α/ for the vowels, /Ο/ and /□/.
