This study aims at helping people use it for materials of Korean language refinement, through analysing and correcting the cases of misuse and abuse of Korean language appearing in the news editorial articles.
There are so many expressions which we misuse before we realize it in our language lives. Especially, in such mass media as broadcasting, newss, magazines, and various books and printed matter, I think the actual conditions of misusing Korean language are serious. Among them, the reason I decided to examine the news editorial articles as the object of studying is that it is news that best shows the language life of a society. It is said that if we examine newss of a society, we can understand the language habits, the language acts, and the language lives of the people using the language. Moreover, as the language of the newss has so various reading classes in comparison with other media, it can give a great influence to the language lives of the people using it. Therefore, this study is intended to recognize the misuse problems of writing appearing in the news editorial articles, and to show the phenomena of them, by dividing them into "the actual conditions of vocabulary misuse and abuse" and "the actual conditions of syntactic misuse and abuse." In addition, I'd like to suggest a way to reduce the errors of writing, if possible.
Language is often called gatherings of sentences. The sentences mean regular arrangement of words. Grammar is nothing but regular arrangement of words, and seems to have very complex structure. But if we ever know it, we can think that it is gatherings of tens of rules in a broad sphere, and of less than several tens in a narrow sphere. But even though we can make right expressions by using right words with a little concern, in real life we may have many cases of misuses because of the shortage of understanding about the meaning or usages of the words.
The greatest problem is the use of unsuitable words in the use of vocabulary, that is, the use of words which have problems in the meaning of the words. In using language, the restriction of vocabulary is one of language application, and it means that social, moral, and psychological habits don't accept a specific vocabulary in a specific context. That is, there is no problem on the side of the conception transmitted by it, but a criterion is given in the language reality. I'd like to present and examine the examples which are misused out of the standard.
As there is so much inflow of the expressions and translations of foreign language, some coined words which are not suitable for the Korean language standard happen to appear. In case of using professional, or technological words, the fact is that people use foreign language at random rather than moderately. Especially, Japanese language and writings influenced Korean language greatly, and nowadays, they deteriorate Korean language continually. We must protect Korean language from foreign coined words including Japanese language and writings.
Korean language has contacted the culture of China and Japan from early on, and has especially been influenced by their languages. After the 1945 Liberation of Korea, Korea has been under the influence of American culture and Korean language has also been affected by English. For Korean language to become a cultivated language, it requires positive attitude to accept vocabulary and expression technique from foreign languages. However, to accept foreign languages thoughtlessly is likely to hinder subjective language life. When we accept foreign languages, it is necessary that we need to have progressive attitude that we create new culture, taking advantage of the foreign culture and throwing away the ultranational and imitative attitude.
Even though people add a phoneme, or make a fortis or an aspirate, in order to emphasize(reinforce) the meaning, this kind of emphasis psychology causes this misuse. Synonymy repetition is its representative example. But this expression may be considered not to be the misuse from the standpoint of diversity of language expression. We can take this overflow into consideration as the refinement object only for the benefit of the conciseness and economy of expression.
There are some cases that the sentences are hard to understand, or we cannot understand the meaning clearly, though they were written grammatically. There are some sentences which we cannot imagine of what they intended to mean. Besides making grammatical sentences, it is also important to show the meaning of them clearly.
In this study, I examined some kinds of misuse, abuse types of Korean language. If we leave these phenomena as they are, we cannot have any chance of accomplishing the refinement of Korean language. So, in order to overcome these problems,
First, we have to improve our ability of using suitable vocabulary, by the reinforcement of school education and the campaign about the education of publicity and communication through various media. We must restrain the thoughtless use of foreign languages and exert ourselves to make suitable Korean expression.
Second, if we are more interested in Korean language, we can correct our wrong language habits in the usage aspect. I think that we can do it, if the necessity of language refinement is known and the initiative role of the intellectual is played through the educational institutions and mass media.
Third, the students must study grammar and composition of school in the syntactic aspect, and be accustomed to the suitable writing.
In this study, I did not show so many misuses·abuses of Korean language. But through the representative cases mentioned above, I have a strong desire to contribute to the refinement of Korean language by confirming and understanding the misuse·abuse of Korean language.
