A study of the headlines in Korean and Japanese newss published in the year 1960, 1980 and 2000 Broadly conceived, the purpose of this study is to inquire into the characteristics of headlines used in Korean and Japanese newss published in the year 1960, 1980 and 2000. The results are as followings.
First of all, in both newss the number of headlines has been on the increase in the year 1960 and 1980. But on the decrease in 2000.
The reason of the decrease might be the descriptive form of headlines using the same size of printing types. On the other hand, in the year 1960 and 1980, the headlines have been written using various types of fonts and printing types.
The number of characters used in headlines has showed an increase over those years. And the rate of the increase has been higher in Korean news the Chosun than Japanese the Asahi. It is thought that the headlines have been written in the descriptive style. And that might be one of the reasons of the augmentation in the number of characters
Second of all, over those period of times, lots of headlines have been written from left to right than written from top to bottom. And the ratio of the decrease in vertical writing has been higher in the Asahi than the Chosun.
Third of all, more and more headlines have been written using punctuation marks in both newss. And quotation marks and
brackets have been widely used. Those result might be of some help to explain the reason of the increase in characters used in headlines.
In case of the Asahi. the quotation mark does not have the meaning of quotation in headlines and the usage of adopted words has been on an increasing trend and the Asahi has been using lots of adopted words than the Chosun. Also the usage of Chinese character has been increasing in the Asahi especially in the year 2000 and as a result, Hiragana and Katakana has been less used in headlines. Contrary to that, in the chosun, the usage of Chinese character has been going right on decreasing and the Hangul has been widely used.
Lastly, in the form of concluding headlines, both newss have been using incomplete sentence conclusion than complete sentence conclusion but the trend of concluding headlines has assumed an different aspect in both newss.
The Asahi's headlines have been wound up using more phrases than sentences but those of the Chosun's have been concluded using more sentences than phrases.
In case of headlines written in sentences, both newss have been characterized by the declarative sentences and the conclusion with the substantives have been broadly showed in case of those written in phrases. And as a whole the Chosun has been using a various technique of conclusions in headlines than the Asahi.
