If one transcribes something into Japanese, there are various ways for it. For example, even transcribing 「human(사람;saram)」of Korean, there are so many ways to transcribe it by media to be used or user, the age and sex of the user, including 「人, ひと, ヒト, hito」, though they have all the same pronunciation. Among them, katakana words including words of foreign origin are remarkably increased in recent years. Especially in newss or magazines, signs on the street, advertising descriptions and even in the words of songs, katakana can be found easily.
Originally katakana is a phonogram that is made by picking out a part of Chinese. In Heian Period, it was a kind of stenographic symbol to notate the meaning and pronunciation beside Chinese characters when a man writes in classical Chinese, which played only an auxiliary role.
The role of katakana has been changed with the times and this study pays attention to katakana words of 「the other」parts which are not belong to the notation rules of katakana under the modern principles of katakana notation. This is the reason to clarify the questions why katakana is used where it should not be used in Japanese notation, what is the real effect and image by notating with katakana.
In this study, therefore, the role and functions of katakana in current Japanese notation are roughly divided into the following four groups, by analyzing katakana words shown in the reader's column on newss and internet, and in letters actually written, which are not belong to the principles of katakana notation, to grasp the actual conditions and a trend of katakana notation by the moderns.
A. As the role of enriching the meaning and image the words have, ⑴ the role of strengthening the main words and expressions of the topic, ⑵ the role of enhancing the degree of things to be expressed by the subject of the expression, and ⑶ the role of clearly showing the expressions in colloquial style and phrases of common use are clarified.
B. In the role of weakening the meaning and image the words have, the roles contrary to A, ⑴ the role of giving the meaning of words ambiguous and ⑵ the role of generally weakening the slang word having an minus image and the image of secret languages are identified.
C. In the role of convenience, the original roles, that is, ⑴ the role of phonetic notation, ⑵ the role of replacing Chinese characters, ⑶ the role of visually giving point to the whole sentence and ⑷ the common usage of katakana words with examples already generalized are examined.
Finally, D. for the expression of one's feelings and judgement, ⑴ the role of showing negative/positive feelings and judgement and ⑵ the expression of feelings by exclamations are identified, making the role and functions of katakana notation clear.
As the result of analyzing and clarifying the role and functions of katakana notation as the above, it is identified that there are different tendencies to use katakana by scenes. In formal scenes such at contributions to newss, conventional katakana words, that is, generalized katakana words are the main part, while in semi-formal scenes on internet, it shows the same tendency as in newss but seems they strongly tend to use katakana words to stress the words and expressions which are the core of the contributor's views and subjects. And in informal scenes such as letters, katakana words are frequently appeared in colloquial expressions clearly representing the subjectivity of the subject of notation.
As shown above, the katakana words that belong to 「the others」in modern Japanese notation are used everywhere with various functions, such as substitution for Chinese characters, strengthening colloquial style, the key word of topics, and generalized words by frequent use. And there are difference in the tendency of using katakana by scenes. The use of these katakana words is increasingly spread, and it is believed that the rate of use of katakana words belonging to 「the others」, furthermore, its role and functions will be more diversified according to the purpose and views, with individualization of language life and allowing the independency of the subject.
