The purpose of this study is to research the examples of the influence of Japanese upon Korean such as the use of Chinese letters in Japanese style, sentence structures and idioms in Japanese manner, pronouncing the words of foreign origin in Japanese style in the "Korean Textbooks" of elementary school at the beginning stage.
After the independence of Korea in 1945, many researchers have studied the influence of Japanese upon Korean and made efforts to revise it. And the book, "The Recovery of The Korean Language" published by the Ministry of culture and education in 1948 was one of the efforts to remove the Japanese vestiges. So I studied on the influence and vestiges of Japanese upon Korean in the textbooks at the beginning stage through this thesis. It was difficult to publish the perfect textbook because of the incomplete condition and scarcity of experts right after the 1945 Liberation of Korea. It was not until 1948 that there were 12 textbooks from 1st grade to 6th grade each semester in the elementary school.
As I had found out in the Korean textbooks in elementary school, there were too much influence and vestiges of Japanese such as Chinese letters, the sentence expressions and the words of foreign origin in Japanese style in spite of the campaign for "The Recovery of The Korean Language". The pronunciation of the words of foreign origin in the present Korean language was different from that of the past and have been revised more similar to the original pronunciation. However, I have found that we're still using the mistakes which existed in the elementary Korean textbooks at the beginning age by speaking and writing the Chinese letters and the expressions of sentence in Japanese manner. There were many ambiguous expressions and idioms influenced by Japanese firmly as well as many examples that are too much accustomed to avoid using them. For example, "be -ing(-하고 있다.)", "have to be(-있어야 할)" "have been -ing(했던 것이다)", " in -ing(-에 있어, -에 있어서)", "the passive expression of Korean influence d by the passive voice of Japanese", "an impersonal pronoun or lifeless thing as subject", "overused propositional word 'ui(의)", and "conventional expressions influenced by Japanese". The influence of such conventional expressions should be studied in the future.
The researcher hopes that this study would be beneficial to the elimination of the influence of Japanese upon Korean and the recovery of the Korean language.
