The purpose of this thesis is to search for an effective Korean phonetics education program for learners with Japanese as their mother language.
Pronunciation is closely related to communication and as the educational level of the learners rises, they tend to put effort in accurate pronunciation. Subject of such pronunciations is the sound, thus practice and training in accurate listening and speaking is necessary.
In this chapter, I tried to provide a pronunciation teaching program, which corrects the pronunciations of the learners who have already learned the Korean language, along with pronunciation practice in the early stages of the learning process.
In chapter 2, I have investigated pronunciation education from the language method of foreign languages, and analyzed the texts, "Korean Pronunciation" by the Korean Language Institute of Yonsei University and "Standard Korean Pronunciation Practice 1 and 2" by the Institute of Korean Culture of Korea University.
Investigating how the pronunciation education process and practice types of initial, middle, and final consonants, which is the purpose of the study, was reflected on the text as a big help in providing a standard needed for actual pronunciation teaching.
In chapter 3, in order to investigate what kind of error occurs in pronunciations of the learners, I have made a questionnaire and experimented it on 15 Japanese international students, and analyzed the results. I have searched for the types of results, errors of initial, middle, and final consonant pronunciation, and the cause of the error by comparing and analyzing the phonetic characteristics of Korean and Japanese.
In chapter 4, with the above content as a foundation, I have provided a teaching program for pronunciation education.
The boundary was set to closed-lip, glottal, and aspiration sounds from the Korean initial consonant, /ㅓ/ and /ㅗ/, /ㅡ/ and /ㅜ/ sound from the middle vowel; and /ㄴ/, /ㅁ/, /ㅇ/ from the final consonant. I have explained and provided a pronunciation education in logic, articulation method, repetitive practice of meaningless syllables, practice in 1·2 or 3 syllable words or in coordinate clauses, and practicing in words inserted in phrases. Such methods were effective for learners in the beginning stages to practice Korean vowel and consonant pronunciation.
I have also talked about pronunciation educational methods of initial, middle, and final consonants in the collective methods of listening, speaking, reading, and writing by utilizing multi media resources such as songs or pictures.
The practice was mainly on pronunciation regarded to be difficult to the learners with Japanese as their mother language using the song "The Terms Desired", and the traditional folk story "Golden Axe, Silvery Axe" recording method. For the pronunciation teaching of foreign words, I have analyzed the difference in the pronunciation of the Korean and Japanese language, and made sure that the game of matching the words in puzzle format is applied in class.
I believe that this is an effective educational method for the learners who have difficulty in pronunciation words they have already learnt or need correcting.
For the effect of pronunciation education using the songs, it is possible for the learners to listen to the song and sing along for repetitive practice in listening and speaking. This creates the strength of long run maintenance of the learnt pronunciation. Also, by sampling the tape for lyrics of the songs, it is possible to correct the pronunciation by the learner themselves.
Recording pronunciation education using traditional folk stories applied two recordings of reading the paragraph and speaking upon looking at the picture. This was a big help in developing phonetics distinction ability, where the learners can detect the incorrect pronunciation by listening attentively to what he or she is saying to oneself.
It is easy to see that most of the learners pronounce the Korean foreign words in the same way as pronouncing them in a Japanese way. There is a need for the pronunciation education of foreign words to be accompanied with Korean communication skills, and an educational method using activities from various types of sources.
Thus, in this thesis, I have utilized this need by adopting a puzzle matching game. The foreign words in Korean and Japanese have differences in syllables to start, and in many cases, the head consonants have different sounds. Thus, through the process of filling in the blanks, it was possible to naturally learn the foreign words' pronunciation in the Korean language.
For communication with accurate Korean pronunciation, along with the efforts of the learners, the interests of the instructors who should teach the phonetics systematically, and development of various types of educational programs, are surely needed.
