Since the advent of computers following Gutenberg' s invention of printing press, the notion of typography has been fundamentally transformed in production of information in the form of books and magazines. We are now on the brink of new revolution in terms that this has resulted in enormous transformation in design and production. Therefore, the transition from analogue to digital and popularization of personal computers have no less significance than invention of the printing press by Gutenberg.
In the West, development of letters took thousands years from signs and hieroglyph to letters and prints. However, it took only 30 years or less to reverse this. Personal computers have promptly changed operation modes in almost all areas of communication in less than 5 years. With a computer, it becomes even easier to produce various printing types so quickly on monitors and hardcopies than those by hand-made ones. That is to say, while the existing type design is dependent on manual work, the digital equipments in place of human hands lead it to expand its visual effect.
When cameras deprived paintings of their function for representation of reality, artists came to realize the distance between reality and representation, which lead them to search for an innovative way of expression. As a result, artists such as Cezanne experimented effects of light and colors. And, Kandinsky and Klee exceeded the limit of symbolism. As photograph had a decisive influence on painting, the advent of computers became a turning point of typography, While the main tools of photographic lettering include colors. brushes, drawing pens, knives, pencils, graph s, compasses, rulers, lettering catalogues, copying machines, drawing boards and tracing s, those of digital design involve personal computers with scanners and laser printers. Furthermore, owing to easy manipulation by computer, font design softwares and page-making programs enable designers to overcome the limits of the old methods.
So far, lettering has been dealt by experts in the type industry such as type designers; however, with help of digital equipments, it is now possible for general graphic designers to do it.
This transformation caused a changeover in typography - creation of new value and new style in typography - which involves a new mode and idea of design. And, the technological change has not only controled the human beings but also influenced human sensibility. Visualization through various media resulted in diversification and subjectification of information of typography, beyond mere communication of its meanings or contents. l believe this is an unavoidable phenomenon, and, therefore, typographers should think over ideas and goals of their practice.
So the, there have been general rules in type design. However, in the computer era, those rules have become invalid, which caused contusion. If the negative viewpoint that the rules have been invalidated is ca]led 'objective modern typography', the positive viewpoint that this situation will provide a chance for creation is called 'subjective destructive typography' .In the latter, it is believed that objects and significance of rules are expanded rather than abolished. Also, in printing media, new terminology is being established, while those for old technology are disappearing. Some of them have become dead language, and others are inconsistent with reality, Therefore, the direction of typography can be decided when its significances and purpose are redefined. For this, it is required for typographers to reconsider the position of typography.
