환경과는 국가 사회적 요구에 의해 설정된 교과로 환경의 급격한 변화 속에서 환경 교육은 시대에 적합한 위상의 정립을 요구받고 있다. 이에 환경교육이 뿌리내리기 위해서는 환경과목에 있어서 용어의 통일과 용어의 정확한 정의가 활용이 되어야 하며 교육과정에 알맞은 수준의 용어를 사용하고 이해시키는 노력은 매우 의미 있다고 하겠다.
본 연구에서는 중학교 '환경' 교과서의 환경용어를 분석하여 사용 용어의 연계성, 통일성, 구성어를 조사하여 분석하였으며, 결론은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 3종 환경 교과서의 총 용어의 수는 863종, 988개로 조사되었고, 이 중 환경 용어사전에 표기된 용어의 수는 유의어를 포함하여 659개였다. 둘째, 한가지 용어로 통일되어 표현된 용어는 전체 863개 중 215개로 24.91%에 해당하는 용어들이 각각 통일성 있게 사용되고 있어, 3종 교과서간의 다르게 표현된 용어들은 통일시킬 필요가 있다. 셋째, 3종 교과서별 용어의 수는 A 교과서 609개, B 교과서 554개, C 교과서 493개로 교과서별 용어수의 차이가 많이 났다. 넷째, 조사대상 용어들 중에서 환경용어사전에 정의되고 있는 용어의 수는 659개(유사 정의어 64개 포함)로 전체 용어의 66.7%에 해당되었다. 다섯째, 용어의 구조 분석에 따른 환경용어의 수는 한자어가 659개 76.36%, 외래어와 한자어가 82개 9.51%로 환경용어의 대부분을 차지하였다. 여섯째, 중학교 환경 교과서에 사용된 용어들을 제 7차 교육과정에서 분류한 학교 환경교육의 영역을 인간과 환경, 환경 문제와 그 대책, 환경 보전에 따라 나누어 본 결과 환경 문제와 그 대책과 관련된 용어들이 가장 많았고, 그 다음으로는 환경 보전과 인간과 환경 등의 순 이었다. 일곱째, 중학교 환경 교과서에 사용된 환경용어와 대학교의 환경과학/공학과에서 사용하는 환경용어의 연계성을 분석한 결과 중학교 교과서에 표현된 용어들의 대부분이 대학교이상의 환경교과에서 사용되고 있어 용어의 연계성을 보여 준다고 할 수 있다. 여덟째, 인터넷에 사용된 환경용어와 교과서에 사용된 환경용어를 비교, 분석한 결과 환경 교과서와는 50% 미만의 일치도를 보이고, 용어의 양적인 변화를 보일 뿐만 아니라 개념의 확장이 너무 급격해 중학교 학생들의 이해 가능한 용어로 보기에는 적당하지 않다고 판단된다.

In order to establish the environment education in korea, suitable usage of environmental terminology must be performed. Thus, in this study, the terminology of environment subjects in junior high schools was analyzed and statistically tabulated in terms of correlation, consistency and structural formulation of each word.
Three domestic textbooks for junior high school students contains 863 terms with 988 words.
Text A has 609 words, B 554 words and C text uses 493 words.
Amongst them, the terms that are specified in an environment terminology handbook are 669 terms, which is 66.7% of total terms.
Investigation on the structural analysis, 76.3% of total terms are originated from chinese characters are 9.5% are based on english.
The most terminology stands for environmental problems and control technology, subsequently environment conservation and human are followed.
Most of the words used in the textbooks for junior high schools also appear in the college, so that it helps the education at university.
On the other hand, the words and technical terms in internet are quite different from official educational institute.
Thus, through the comprehensive investigation, consistent campaign to revise and correct the errors or mis-introduced terminologies must be carried out.
