음악의 역사 중 지휘의 역사는 얼마되지 않는 짧은 세월의 역사를 갖고 있지만 오늘날 지휘자들의 지휘법은 극히 개성적인 지휘 기술을 갖고 있으면서도 지휘법의 관습적인 원칙에 의하여 그 통일성과 체계를 이루고 있다.
우리나라에서도 이러한 원칙을 기본으로 현재 많은 음악대학에서 지휘자로서의 제반 기초지식 등을 교육하기 위하여 지휘법의 교육이 이루어지고 있는데, 여기에 사용되는 교재의 대다수가 외국서적의 번역물에 의존하여 실시되고 있는 실정이다.
지휘법의 교육에 있어서 올바른 용어의 사용은 지휘지식 체계를 정확히 전달하고, 지휘 기술을 익히고 향상시키는데 매우 중요한 역할을 하는것이기 때문에 논자(論者)는 국내에서 교재로 사용되고 있는 지휘법에 대한 번역물들을 선택하여 지휘법에 쓰이는 용어를 분류하였고 그 용어가 원서(原書)에서 나타내고자 하는 의미와 각 번역물에 표현된 우리말 표기의 쓰임과 그 문제점을 고찰하여 보았다.
그 결과 많은 교재들에서 사용되고 있는 지휘법 용어의 우리말 표기는 체계화 내지는 일정한 규칙이 적용되지 않고 용어가 의미하는 뜻을 그때 그때 달리 사용하고 있음을 볼 수 있었다.
따라서 이러한 용어의 혼용은 지휘법의 교육에 있어서 교육자나 피교육자 모두에게 많은 지장을 초래하고 있다.
논자는 지휘법 교육의 체계와 확립을 위해 지휘법 용어의 사용에 있어서 외래어 그대로 사용 될 수 있는 것과 우리말 표기의 적절한 통일안이 시급히 이루어져야 된다고 보며 이러한 것을 시행하기 위해서는 지휘법에 쓰이는 용어를 체계적으로 연구하고 구체화 할 수 있는 연구기관 내지는 연구단체가 설치 되어져야 된다는 것을 제언하면서 결론에 대신하였다.

Conducting has no such long history compared to the history of music in general. Currently so many renowned conductors take possession of their own characteristic conducting techniques, which, at the same time, are closely related and united with those of others based on the traditional principles.
Current situation in teaching conducting in our country can not be regarded as so bright. In many colleges of music the curriculums for conducting are designed for the purpose of teaching some general basic knowledges required for counductors. It is true that most of the texts now being used are depending upon translated versions of foreign books.
Using proper terminologies in the teaching of conducting are carrying important roles in handing over knowledges of conducting correctly as well as mastering and improving conducting techniques. From this perspective, this thesis divided conducting terminologies currently being used based on translated versions about conducting which are generally used as texts. First the comparison was made as to the meanings of terms used in conducting in the original texts and the translated versions. Following studies were performed as to the main problems of using translated versions.
From the above study it was known that the conducting expressions in Korean language translated from the foreign texts have no such coherance as to their meanings and usages. Rather, it was found that those terms were interpreted to have different meanings according to the different situations. Consequently much confusion has aroused in the teaching, and, at the same time, in the learning conducting, thereby causing a lot of trouble to those who are involved in teaching as well as those who are involved in learning conducting alike.
It must be strongly suggested that unity must be established in the area of using conducting terms whether we should adopt original language or translated terms. For this purpose, systematic research must be accomplished about systematic or relevant usage of conducting terms. Conclusion must be induced that to fulfill this goal, a special research institution or association must be established at the outset.
