Such difficulties might be caused by mainly because not only do economic news stories require knowledgeable expertness, but vocabularies used in the economic stories function as considerably difficult factor for readers to understand the stories properly.
It is generally regarded that if the contents of the news stories would not be written easily, readers would not read at all or give little attention to them.
In order to make the readability of economic news stories more comprehensive, it is necessary among other things to enhance readers' readability levels both by using easier words and vocabularies and by simplifying the syntactic structure. So the readability of news stories should be improved to the direction of easing the contents of the stories.
The purpose of this study is to examine what factors would affect the readability of news stories, especially that of economic news stories, as well as to what extent all the factors would affect the readability. And it is also searched that how much differences exist between the readability of economic stories and other types of them such as political or social ones. The differences of readability among each eight economic news stories were also looked into.
The data were picked up from news stories of the most influential dailies in Korea. The collected news stories were broken down into two category: eight economic stories, and four other stories ranging from political, social, cultural and athletic ones, respectively.
Readability-related factors are 1. syntactic structure(broken down into simple sentence, compound sentence, complex sentence), 2. meaning of word, 3. length of sentence, 4. number of Chinese character, 5. number of Chinese-written words, 6. words of foreign origin, 7. words of foreign-origin written in foreign language, 8. figure, 9. abbreviated word, 10. technical terminology.
The results of this study demonstrate that technical terminology, Chinese character, and complex sentence were found as the most influential three factors on the readability of all the twelve sampling news stories. These three factors were statistically significant. Concerning the eight economic stories, technical terminology and meaning of word are the most influential two factors affecting the stories' readability with statistical significance.
Followings are major explanations exerted from results of this study;
(1) Technical terminology is the most influential factor on the readability of news news stories regardless of their types.
(2) The readability of news stories are further affected by word and vocabulary factors, rather than by syntactic structural factors.
(3) The most difficult type of strory in readability is economic foreign news story, followed by political news and economic straight news story.
(4) The average readability level of economic news stories is more difficult than that of four other types including political, social, cultural and athletic news stories.
(5) The readability level of policial news story is more difficult than average level of eight economic news stories.
(6) The readability level of social news story is the easiest among the twelve types of news stories.
In conclusion, the above results imply that vocabulary factors such as technical terminology, meaning of word and Chinese character should be dealt in a more comprehensive way to improve the readability of news stories. It is also necessary that new formats of story-writing style would be required to ease the readability level of foreign, economic straight, political news stories, which were found, in their readability level, as most difficult ones among the twelves. Finally non-linguistic factors concerning the readability should be taken into consideration for further comprehension of news stories.
