근대교육이 시작된 한말(1894∼1910) 과학교육의 실상을 밝히고, 이 시기에 편찬된 6종의 물리교과서 중 3편을 선정하여 체재 및 특징을 분석하며, 현재 고등학교 물리교과서와 비교함으로써 한말 물리교육의 수준과 교과내용 및 실험의 시기적 특징을 분석하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 한말의 과학교육은 근대적인 문화를 받아들이려는 개화의 의지가 잘 나타나 있고 특히 과학교육을 통해 실용성을 강조했던 시기임을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 한말 물리교과서를 체재면에서 분석해 볼 때 모두 국한문혼용체를 사용하였고, 총분량면에서는 「소물리학」이 많은 요목을 다루었으며, 구성면에서는 「초등물리학교과서」가 체계적인 구성으로 되어 있다. 세째, 한말 교과서와 현재의 고등학교 물리교과서를 비교 분석하면 한말 교과서에 현대물리 관련내용을 아직 등장하지 못하였고 실험은 설명식 실험이 주를 이루었다. 특히 현재의 물리교과서와의 다른 특징은 기계 기구에 관한 설명과 사용법이 많이 등장하는 것으로 실용주의를 강조한 한말의 교육청책이 물리교과서에도 반영되었음을 알 수 있었다.

This study intends to clarify the real aspects of science education in the period of the Late Yi Dynasty (1894 ~ 1910) in which modern education began, and examines the level of physics education and the periodic characteristics of curricular contents and experiments in that period by analyzing the format and feature of three textbooks among six physics textbooks published in the period compared with current high school physics textbooks. Firstly, by science education, the Late Yi Dynasty showed a strong will of enlightenment to introduce modern civilization, and especially take emphasis on practicality. Secondly, all the physics textbook in that period were written using both Korean and Chinese characters in combination. 「Small Physics」 dealt with the most items quantitatively, and 「Elementary Physics Textbook」was the most systematic on construction. Thirdly, it was too early for the contents of modern physics to appear in the textbooks of that period, and experiments in those textbooks were more descriptive, while those in current physics textbooks are more investigative. Especially, it can be said that the education policy of the Late Yi Dynasty which focused on pragmatism was reflected on the physics textbooks, judging from the appearence of descriptions and methods of using machines and tools in the textbooks. |
