A study about Korean Culture Class Design for secondary schools in Thailand - focusing on project learning Kang, Sunghwa Graduate School of KyungHee Cyber University Global Korean Studies This study is aimed at an instruction design for Korean culture of secondary schools in Thailand, focusing on project learning in Korean culture education targeting Thai secondary Korean learners. A culture class as a project learning centered culture class suggested in this study has significance for providing the base of systematic Korean culture learning accordingly new national curriculum and system for Korean subject of secondary education in Thailand and Korean culture education and building a class model available to be used in Thai secondary education field. Exiting project culture education from several studies is different from culture education for Korean learners of Thai secondary schools in terms of its goals and targets which resulting difficulties in applying in real Thai secondary education field. In this study, therefore, it is aimed at designing a class model corresponding to Thai secondary education field with supplementation. The process and result for this study will be as below. In chapter 1 of introduction, it suggests the purpose and necessity of this study as well as its methodology. Moreover, it reviews advanced researches related to culture education from each language group, culture education for students of Thai secondary schools, project culture class and provides a project culture class which considering the needs of Thai secondary learners and learning environments. In the chapter 2 about theoretical background knowledges, it searches theories about culture education to set the specific standards for composing culture class. This study reviews discussions about culture education goal setting and culture education content selection to establish appropriate orientation of culture class for secondary learners in Thailand. It provides theoretical evidences for project learning centered culture class with reviewing the concept, differentiation factors, complement factors, teacher role and learning process of project learning as one of methodologies. In chapter 3, it analyzes present conditions about Korean education and culture education of secondary schools in Thailand, new national curriculum of Thai education department to check their Korean culture learning environment and based on that, it prepares the foundation for project culture class composition step by step as well as teachers and learners’ needs analysis. From learners’ need analysis result, it analyzes their learning experiences of Korean culture, learning preference of learners and preference of project culture class to be reflected in project culture class composition and from teachers’ need analysis result, it analyzes its suitability of project culture class and cultural item preference order to select cultural items for project culture class and deduct its validity of project culture class. In chapter 4, it provides the principles of composing project cultural class and its standards and it designs a project culture class model and suggests each step of specific class procedure. The principles of composing should be suitable for curriculum, possible to be applied in education field, be meaningful and possible to enhance communicative competences, motivate learners’ interests, make learner role assignment, and be possible to evaluate. Its standards for composition should be a class proceeding accordingly learners’ Korean learning levels, a course dealing with 2 subjects for each semester, 3 lessons for each subject (2 of in class instruction, 1 of after class instruction), 2 hours for each stage, include examples and learning for vocabulary and expression, consist of various activities and perform learner self-evaluation and teacher evaluation. Then this study suggests preparation stage, implementation stage (home work stage), presentation and evaluation stage for a culture class course model and based on this model, it presents a learning example dealing with ‘Korean food’ as a subject. Through this study as mentioned, it is expected to use project culture class model suitable for new national curriculum for Thai secondary schools and available to be applied for real Korean culture class. This study, however, could not suggest various learning examples by subjects in terms of culture education syllabus with expecting follow up studies to deal with providing class model by each syllabus.
