This study has a goal of comparing and analyzing differences of morphemes and meanings of words and collocations for colors in Korea and France to support analyzing the cultural symbols and backgrounds of words indicating colors of each country. In order to meet the goal, bunches of collocations indicating red colors and blue colors were collected from news resources of the two countries, and with the resources collected, various ways words indicating colors are used in each country were looked at by analyzing language and cultural differences in words for colors of the two countries. Chapter one explains the necessity of research in words indicating colors in Korean and French and introduces prior studies concerning the intention of this study, research materials and methods. Chapter two looks at contrastive analysis which is the theoretical background of this study, compares and analyzes the concept and characteristics of words indicating colors of the two countries, mainly in morphological and syntactic characteristics. For Chapter three and four, collocations collected from news resources of the two countries were categorized and analyzed largely by equivalency and difference in meaning. According to the results of the color collocation equivalence type analysis, for the Korean words, when it comes to delivering meanings, many of them were found to be used as explained in dictionaries. Also in some cases, words were found to have derived meanings that are widely understood in society. For the French words, however, most words were found to have independent and symbolic meanings, rather than to be used as explained in dictionaries which mostly explain superficial meanings of words indicating colors. This means that through understanding contexts, not just words indicating colors and collocation expressions, it is possible to understand meanings. As a result, it was concluded that understanding contexts in which color expressions are used, cultural backgrounds of each country, and structural characteristics in words indicating colors is the prerequisite to understanding meanings of words for colors. Chapter five deals with expressions for colors collected from news articles and analyzes ways color expressions are used largely by 'association meaning, way they are used and cultural symbol'. As a result, when it comes to morphemes, for Korean words indicating colors, they are generally used in basic and derivation forms. For French words however, they are used in basic and compound forms. Also, there were differences in meanings for 'red' colors and 'blue' colors in each area in which they were used, and it was possible to figure out what causes the differences by understanding words and collocations for color expressions, the backgrounds symbolic meanings are from. Chapter six summarizes the whole contents of the study and shows implications and limits this study has. The results of the study hopefully can serve as basic resources for research in words indicating colors in both countries as well as help people learning Korean in French-speaking countries and Koreans learning French better learn words for colors and get a better cultural understanding.
