Korean kinship term ‧ reference term are more complex and subdivided than other countries. This characteristic of Korean language becomes a factor that makes the use of kinship term for establishing proper relationship with family or relatives more difficult and reluctant to marriage immigrants from foreign countries. This study compared the concept, type, and characteristics of Korean address terms with Japanese, and investigated similarities and differences of the two countries in using a type of address term, the kinship term. Also, this study intended to analyze how the current Korean textbooks are covering kinship term and reference term, and to suggest effective educational method for Korean kinship term and reference term based on the findings to Japanese marriage based immigrants. According to the result of investigating characteristics of Korean and Japanese reference terms in Chapter 2, Korean language showed strong tendency of avoiding the use of name-type reference terms compare to the Japanese language that actively uses the name-type reference term. Among characteristics of lexical term, the use of family lexical term was limited to older people in both countries, and it is considered that kinship terms became segmented in Korean to classify the other party according to the characteristic of Korean language that avoids the use of name-type reference term with low respect. Also, a characteristic of the hierarchical nature of vertical Korean social structure applied different reference terms to relatives of the same generation as formality of classifying family hierarchy affected strongly by a function that ranks status within the family. This characteristic of Korean kinship term becomes a factor that foreigners find difficult in learning Korean compare to their native language. This study prepared the following educational methods of Korean kinship term and reference term in section 2 of chapter 4 for Japanese marriage-based immigrants. First, marriage-based immigrants were instructed to study essential kinship terms in a relationship with in-laws according to the level. Reference terms that are hardly used in Korea or even Koreans are not familiar with were not included, and kinship terms mainly concentrated in the beginning level in current teaching materials were divided into 4 steps and started with compulsory vocabulary. Secondly, learning goal was set up by unit when teaching kinship terms that were divided into 4 steps to clearly suggest what learners need to master at this stage. Thirdly this study gradually expanded the lexical field from existing one by introducing the concept of the list of kinship terms as a way to approach complex Korean kinship terms, and avoided a method of unconditionally memorizing kinship terms for learners to actively participate in learning by analogizing kinship terms. Fourthly, this study suggested a method of checking Korean kinship terms they have learned in beginning and intermediate level through reading in advanced level and to conduct integrated activities by comparing and contrasting with kinship terms of the learners’ native language. These activities will help learners to engage freely and actively in learning beyond existing fragmentary learning method of Korean kinship terms and provide opportunity for them to gain interest in their family relation or relative relation. This study identified differences in Korean and Japanese kinship terms by comparing kinship terms of the two countries, and progressed discussion with an intention to investigate the current status of address term and reference term and to provide improvement methods through the analysis on current Korean language textbook.
