The purpose of the study is suggest a way to use the movie <Ode to my father> as a tool for understanding Korean culture. The number of foreigners living in Korea is increasing, and there is a corresponding need to make an understanding of the culture more accessible. In addition to this, there is a need on the Korean part to be able to understand and disseminate the 'Cultural Literacy', and this is essential in any society of people with different cultural backgrounds. Currently, there are some studies about teaching foreigners Korean culture within studies of the Korean as Foreign language. Yet most of the methods remain cursory attempts at cultural education, since they are often overshadowed by the focus on lingual education. This is one of the reasons why the idea of using movies as a method of culture understanding and education has been suggested, especially outside the realm of language instruction. Movies are excellent reflections of societal value systems, and convey historical facts to us. Indirect experience of certain period of time is possible through viewing movies, and one can discover the aspects of individuals in history by empathizing with them. Familism in Korea has been transformed and fortified through the Korean war, rapid industrialization and urbanization, and became one of the essential values in understanding Korean culture. Being expanded into Quasi-familism, it has worked as one of the central principles of Korean society and culture. We can find some aspects of Korean people adapting themselves to the tectonic changes, through the movie’s historical incidents and behaviors of the main characters. It is also possible to comprehend cultural codes by discovering the course of development of Korean familism and value system. Some of the following are the historical facts and implications found in the movie <Ode to my father>, which are codes and elements contributing the current state of Korean culture, namely being that: the family unit worked as a safety net for most people during the Korean war; the lives of family members were of the highest priority; the role of women in wartime was outstanding; there was an eagerness to continue the education of talented individuals, even during the time of war, being supported by family members; many young women left home and worked at factories to support their family members; two well-know cases included the operation of coal mines in Germany and combating the Vietnam War; both of the aforementioned cases worked for many young Korean men as a means of escaping poverty; working hard to the family was perceived as the service for the development of the country; TV programs like <War-divided Family Reunion Telethon> did help to shape the communal notion of "we" in the minds of Korean people; Korean "weness" is an extended form of familism, sharing at the time internal cohesion and strong hostility toward the outside; these elements contributed to the continuation of cultural mores to this day. This study neither covers every cultural phenomenon that can be found in the movie <Ode to my father>, nor does it suggest methods that can be readily applied to the actual process of education. However, the substantial value of this study indicates that understanding Korean culture can be made possible through the medium of movies. Finally, it is a call for more pragmatic methods and diverse plans for the edification of the public in the future regarding Korean culture.
