M.A. Thesis A Study on Teaching Korean Emotion Vocabulary for Married Immigrant Women and the Usage of the Learner - Focusing on Self-disclosure - Kim Kyungja Department of Korean Language Education as a Second Language Graduate School Yeungnam University (Supervised by Lee Mihyang) Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine if the vocabularies used for emotional expression are presented appropriately in learning emotional expression, important part of communication in Korean language education for married immigrant women. The reason why one expresses one’s feeling is to promote a relationship through smooth communication with others. Simple expression can be possible with basic vocabularies, but for a successful communication, it is important to understand the relationship and situation between me and communication partners and adjust the degree of emotional expression. However, married immigrant women who are not proficient in Korean have many difficulties in expressing their feeling as naturally as possible in Korean language. Therefore, married immigrant women who learn Korean language require know-how to adjust the level of emotional expression and select emotional vocabulary suitable for the relationship with communication partners and the contexts of conversation when expressing their feeling. Chapter 1 and 2 summarize previous studies, examine the directions and contents of the researches that’d been conducted so far, and set the directions of this study. After defining the scope of emotion vocabulary and subjects of study, the chapters extract feeling vocabularies from target textbooks. Chapter 3 compares the emotion vocabularies extracted from Chapter 2 with those in 『Reports on Vocabulary Selection Results for Korean Language Learners』 by the National Academy of the Korean Language centering on the self-disclosure of feeling to understand the distribution of feeling vocabulary. Chapter 4 grasps the actual condition of how the emotional expressions shown in textbooks are realized in married immigrant women by conducting a survey and provides teaching methods for effective emotion vocabulary education. The findings from this study can be summarized as follows: First, understanding and using emotion vocabularies among married immigrant women had nothing to do with learning period and academic background, but was related to length of residence. In other words, those who resided for a longer period used more feeling vocabularies. This suggests that married immigrant women have learned their emotional expressions in real life rather than through studying so far. So this period of learning for effective education should be reduced. Second, expression of emotion was more likely to get an understanding from others than non-expression of emotion, regardless of linguistic ability in expressing a feeling. In the survey on the presence or absence of feeling expression experience, 14 in 29 respondents in total replied that their feelings were understood by others and among which, 12 respondents told that they could not express their feelings in Korean language. This suggests that confidence is important for married immigrant women in expressing their feelings. Third, as a result of classifying the emotional expression vocabularies depending on self-disclosure stage, most vocabularies were distributed around the impact on the relationship with others. This suggests that Korean language emotional expression education suitable for the situation and context is very important for married immigrant women. Finally, Korean language textbooks for married immigrant women do not handle such women’s emotional expression education importantly and have relatively more vocabularies that express positive emotions than 『Vocabulary for Korean Language Learners』. Given that the objects of the textbook are married immigrant women, this suggests that the patriarchal characteristics of Korean traditional culture have an influence on Korean language textbooks. This study is significant in that unlike the studies that’d been conducted so far, it attempted to examine the feeling vocabularies shown in the textbook in the self-disclosure dimension. Emotional expression can’t be made alone and its purpose is to solve a problem and improve a relationship after exposing feeling. Therefore, selecting and expressing appropriate vocabularies suitable for situation and context is seen as an important issue.
