A Study on Using the SIOP Model to Teach Korean Body Idioms to Intermediate Learners with English Backgrounds The purpose of this study is to investigate on how to teach Korean body idioms to intermediate learners with English backgrounds using the SIOP Model. According to the KOSIS, (Korean Statistical Information Service), there has been an increase in the attendance of foreign students at Korean universities. As such, foreign are required to use ‘school language‘, which is the language that students use at school for writing s, participating in discussions or giving speeches and presentations, etc. Moreover, there is a high chance that these people could work for a Korean company after graduation, and it also means they will need to be able to use ’the work language‘ as well. Korean body idioms would be a good way to give their opinions in an effective and diverse manner, however, without taking the time to study them, comprehension is difficult. Idioms are passed down through generations and often include the cultures and traditions of a people. Thus, learning Korean body idioms may be especially difficult for English learners to learn because western culture is very different to Asian culture. Therefore, we need to teach body idioms to English learners. Research shows that the roughly 140 Korean and English body idioms, such as idioms about the hand, eye, head, mouth, foot, ear and nose could be separated into 4 different types of idioms. The first type of body idiom is where both the Korean idiom and its counterpart have same meaning, and the expressions from both languages are interchangeable. The second type of body idiom is where both the English and Korean idiom use the same body parts, but English idioms are different from the Korean idioms. The third type of idiom is where both countries' idioms have the same meanings, but the Korean idiom only uses the body part. The fourth and final type of idiom is where only Korean idiom exists. The SIOP Model is one of the most effective ways to teach body idioms because the SIOP Model has been extensively developed by educators and contains detailed key features for the teachers to create lessons. It was originally made to help monitor the teachers but then the developers discovered that it is very useful to create lessons and do self-assesment for teachers. This study will show the importance of teaching Korean body idioms to English learners using the SIOP model. It will help teachers create more effective vocabulary lessons as well as other subjects while allowing them to properly reflect on their lessons.
