Speech Level Singing (SLS) Technique is the vocalization developed by Seth Riggs that help to sing comfortably in a stable state of a degree of talking as usual. Seth Riggs, who developed the SLS technique, used this technique not only as a singing vocalization but also as a voice, vocal therapy to help the best surgeon in the United States to cure the vocal cord disease that hinder vocalization. The purpose of this study was to see how positive effects the SLS technique have on the vocal improvement of voice with vocal nodules using objective evaluation and subjective evaluation tools before and after applying it. In this study, we selected 5 practical music vocal women of 20-30 years old who were diagnosed with vocal nodules and instructor, who can instruct SLS technique with SLS certified instructor Level 3.5, conducted individual lessons a total of 8 sessions for 4 weeks, and also performed by dictation with vocal hygiene for each session during the study to ensure stable treatment. The voice evaluation of this study was carried out once before the application of the SLS technique, and after conducting all the session lessons, the whole evaluation was conducted once again and evaluated twice in total and was performed with breathing and vocalization ability test, pitch range test, acoustical test, GRBAS, Korean Voice Handicap Index (K-VHI). As data processing and analysis, Wilcoxon Singed Rank Test, a nonparametric test, was performed using SPSS 18.0 (Statistics Package for the Social Science 18.0) and the statistical significance level was tested at less than 0.05. The results of this study are as follows. First, the maximum phonation time (MPT) value of vocal with vocal nodule statistically significantly increased (p <.05) after applying the SLS technique in breathing and vocalization ability test. Second, the highest and overall pitch range value of vocal with vocal nodule statistically significantly increased (p <.05) after applying the SLS technique in pitch range test, and though not statistically significant, the median of the lowest pitch range decreased. Third, the shimmer value of vocal with vocal nodule statistically significantly decreased (p <.05) after applying the SLS technique, and though not statistically significant, acoustic test values of all subjects were within the normal threshold value except for the soft phonation index (SPI) value of one subject. Fourth, in the GRBAS evaluation, the overall grade (G) score of vocal with vocal nodule statistically significantly decreased (p <.05) after applying the SLS technique, and though not statistically significant, the median number of the coarse voice (R) and the husky voice (B) decreased. Fifth, in the K-VHI evaluation, K-VHI total score and the physical range (P) score of vocal with vocal nodule statistically significantly decreased (p <.05) after applying the SLS technique. This study suggests that the application of SLS technique is effective in improving the ability of breathing and vocalization. he utilization of the thyroaytenoid muscle (TA) and the cricothyroid muscle (CT), which are used to change pitch range, was higher after application compared to before application, and after applying the SLS technique, the improvement of the voice quality and the results of the Speaking Fundamental Frequency (SFF) suggest that the subject can live after applying the similar degree of pitch range before the application in the normal life. In conclusion, it is suggested that SLS technique can help improve normal voice, and can be used as a therapy that can make songs work or maintain normal life and work for voice job group. It is also believed to have helped to improve the physical factors that helped to sing while keeping own personal voice quality. The purpose of this study was to present the objective data on how positive effects the SLS technique have on the vocal improvement by comparing the change of breathing and vocalization characteristics before and after applying SLS technique to vocal with vocal nodule through subjective test and subjective test. However, this study has limitation to practical music vocal five women patients with vocal nodules eight times of four weeks. Therefore, in future study, SLS technique breathing and vocalization characteristics studies will be conducted by supplementing more diverse voice diseases, distinction of sex, subjects, occupation group, and test tools.
