This dissertation aims to make a statistical, morpho-syntactic analysis about Korean and Chinese person expressions by example analysis with the examples extracted from Korean written corpus and Chinese corpus; and based on the concepts of ‘deixis(reference)’ and ‘person’ the characteristics of both Korean and Chinese person expressions are defined and contrasted. For this aim, statistical analysis method of extracting examples from the corpora with certain scale is selected, and the contrastive findings of Korean and Chinese person expressions is effectively presented. The unique characteristics of Korean person expressions are much more clearly revealed by analyzing the contrastive findings. Carrying distinguishing characteristics of Korean person expressions, moreover is verified by comparing with other language. These characteristics of Korean person expressions can be thought that not only employing in Korean linguistics, contrastive linguistics and applied linguistics, but also helping Chinese Korean learners comprehending Korean person expressions. In Chapter 1, the main aim, necessity and the objects of this study are explicitly produced, and the preceding researches of Korean and Chinese personal pronouns are also considered and analyzed. In Chapter 2, the studies of theoretical background about Korean and Chinese personal pronouns are described. In addition, the concepts and the various views from different linguists of reference and person are examined. In detail, after organizing the concepts of reference and person how to examine Koran and Chinese person expressions in depth is accomplished. In Chapter 3, the quantitative distribution investigation and contrast of Korean and Chinese person expressions are statistically described by using Corpus linguistics methodology. Person expressions are divided into for four kinds in this study which are personal pronouns, demonstrative pre-nouns / person nouns, person nouns, person proper nouns. The concrete frequency and ratio, distribution of these four kinds person expressions are considered to describe the aspects of example sentences extracted from corpora. In accordance with the concrete numerical value, the practical findings of Korean and Chinese are contrasted to comprehend the statistical similarities and differences. Especially, how to reflect the unique characteristics of Korean person expressions with the differences of Korean and Chinese person expressions is analyzed at full length. In Chapter 4 where qualitative research method is being progressed, Korean and Chinese person expressions are morpho-syntactically considered detailedly to organize the concrete morpho-syntactic characteristics of Korean and Chinese person expressions. How first person expressions and second person pronouns and their substitution expression which are demonstrative pre-nouns / person nouns, person nouns, person proper nouns carrying the aspects of singular and plural expressions and honorific expressions, and what the detailed aspects are, whether the morpho-syntactic elements can influence the morpho-syntactic characteristics are investigated. Furthermore, the morpho-syntactic characteristics of Korean and Chinese person expressions are analyzed and contrasted to organize the similarities and differences. According to these differences, the analysis of morpho-syntactic characteristics of Korean person expressions is established additionally to verify the distinctive characteristics of Korean person expressions. In Chapter 5, the statistical characteristics and the morpho-syntactic characteristics of both Korean and Chinese person expressions are organized and synthesized to propose how different the Korean and Chinese person expressions are, how characteristic the actual usage of Korean person expressions is. It is important to note that the distinctive statistical characteristics and morpho-syntactic characteristics of Korean person expressions is significant under the perspectives of objective grammar description.
