The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors affecting the learning motivation and demotivation of university students in Singapore taking Korean as unrestricted elective, and investigate what differences exist in the motivating and demotivating factors based on their Korean levels. The issues of this study are as follows: 1) What are major motivating factors of learning Korean for foreign university students taking Korean as unrestricted elective? 2) Are there any differences in the factors affecting the learning motivation depending on the students’ Korean levels? 3) What are major demotivating factors of leaning Korean for foreign university students taking Korean as unrestricted elective? 4) Are there any differences in the factors affecting the learning demotivation depending on the students’ Korean levels? In order to examine these study questions, surveys were conducted for the students of University N in Singapore. The survey responses were analyzed utilizing descriptive statistics of the SPSS statistical software and independent two-sample t-test. The study was conducted with mixed methods, incorporating both quantitative study through the analysis of surveys and qualitative study by interpreting open-ended responses to the survey questions. The results of this study are as follows: First, major factors affecting the learning motivation of foreign university Korean learners were the travel orientation and the cultural interest. In addition, students’ awareness of Korea and Korean language and interest in foreign languages could be other major factors. Secondly, the motivating factors depending on the Korean levels, which were divided into two, the first level and the second level and above, did not show any statistically significant difference. Thirdly, major factors affecting the demotivation of foreign university Korean learners were the evaluation factor and the language factor. Furthermore, the qualitative study showed that the competition factor was another major demotivating factor. Lastly, there was a statistically significant difference in the demotivating factors depending on the Korean levels in terms of the learning environment factor, which showed students in the first level were demotivated more than students in the second level and above in terms of learning environment. In addition, the competition factor and the language factor showed differences depending on the Korean levels, due to the fact that the unfair competition exists in the first level, and the difficulty of the language increases as the level goes up. With these results, this study suggested motivating Korean learners with the major motivating factors such as using cultural contents in Korean class. It also proposed a possible solution to weaken the demotivating factors by providing the preparatory course for Korean level 2 or the bridge course between the Korean levels This study is significant as it showed the specific factors of motivation and demotivation in learning Korean as a foreign language. This is particularly meaningful that it discovered the differences of demotivating factors depending on the Korean levels, based on the situation that the number of students decreases drastically as the level goes up. For further growth of Korean education, it would be necessary to investigate more on the motivating and demotivating factors targeting various Korean learners. ,免费韩语论文,韩语论文题目 |
