The purpose of this study is to analyze the existing textbooks and to prepare the basic materials for the improvement of writing materials in order to improve the academic writing Korean writing materials for improving the writing ability of foreign students. Currently, the number of foreign students has been increased steadily, and interest in Korean for academic purposes has been increasing. Foreign students have a great deal of difficulty in studying at universities and graduate schools, and academic writing is the most difficult part of the academic process. Recently, a lot of studies on Korean for academic purposes have been conducted and researches reflecting the demand for writing function for academic purposes are continuing. This is because the learner's demand for writing is an integral part of successfully completing the study and is directly related to the post-evaluation scores. However, it is a reality that the proportion of teaching and learning related to writing for academic purpose is lower than other areas such as speaking and listening. Considering that learners who are studying Korean for academic purposes face various genres of academic writing activities at universities and graduate schools, the study of academic writing and teaching materials for Korean should be continued and developed. In order to improve writing materials for Korean learners for academic purpose, we selected the 5 Korean textbooks for academic purposes written in the language institutes of the 5 universities and the 5 Korean textbooks for academic purposes written as commercial, cultural publications in general publisher. We analyzed the composition and contents of 10 textbooks. We analyzed the structure and contents of the existing textbooks and presented desirable improvements of the textbooks. Prior to analyzing the textbooks, we reviewed in advance the theoretical background about the Korean for academic purposes, about the Korean writing Curriculum for academic purposes, and about the Korean writing textbooks for academic purposes. Also, we examined the previous research about the discussion of Korean needs analysis for academic purposes, about the discussion on research related to writing for academic purposes, and about the discussion on the development of teaching materials for academic purposes. In order to evaluate and analyze the textbooks, the study of evaluation theory and analytical theory of textbooks was examined and the analysis items and the analysis criteria needed for analyzing the Korean textbooks for academic purposes of this study were referred to. In order to establish criteria for selection of textbooks and analysis items for textbooks, existing studies were referred to. The reasons for selection of the textbooks and the framework of analysis of the textbooks were divided into the aspects of external and internal composition, and each analysis item was set up and the explanation of each item was presented. We analyzed the external and internal compositional aspects of Korean writing materials for academic purposes developed until recently, and analyzed the characteristics of the textbooks, and looked for the points to be supplemented by the shortcomings and disadvantages of the analyzed textbooks. Based on this, this study suggested improvements to the desirable Korean writing textbook for academic purposes. The textbook should meet the needs of learners and be an effective tool for learners in class or self-study. Therefore, it is necessary to maximize the motivation of learners by encouraging learners' interest and it should not be difficult to carry around and improve learning efficiency by using various supplementary materials and constructs. In addition, it should include topics that can cover various field knowledge in consideration of diverse majors of academic purpose learner, and should include writing activities that can utilize vocabulary, grammar, and expressions in various ways. In addition, the writing activities of genre-based learning and process-oriented learning should be structured appropriately so that learners should be given opportunities to complete the writing and various writing strategies by genre should be presented. It should also include a self-check evaluation table that can check completed texts for themselves and an evaluation checklist with criteria by which peers and teachers can receive feedback. It is meaningful that this suggests a way to help the improvement of writing skills of learners for academic purpose by suggesting ways to improve the textbooks required for foreign students' academic difficulties. It is expected that this research can be used as basic data to improve existing Korean writing materials for academic purposes and to develop writing materials.
