This study aims to examine the Korean language education for the marriage migrants living in the Korean rural areas, identify its problems, and suggest the improvement plans. Currently, international marriage accounts for 41% of the total marriage in Korean rural areas. The Korean language education is the most fundamental tool that eases out the maladjustment and conflicts of these immigrants and helps them settle down in the regions. In this regard, this aims to examine the Korean language education for these immigrants and present improvement plans. To this end, the study selected Boeun-gun, Yeongdong-gun, and Okcheon-gun as the representatives of the Korean rural areas and conducted surveys and interviews targeting the Korean language education institutes, Korean language teachers, and marriage immigrants for three weeks from October 2015. The study collected the data on the Korean language education from the multi-cultural family support centers in these areas, distributed 9 copies of the questionaries to the Korean language teachers and 121 copies to the marriage immigrants, and collected their responses. The results of their analysis provided several implications and drew out improvement plans. The contents of this study by chapter are as follows. ChapterⅠstates the purpose and necessity of this study, introduces the contents and methods of this study and reviews the previous studies on the Korean education for the marriage immigrants and these immigrants. Chapter Ⅱ, based on the statistics from the government, examines in detail the present status and characteristics of the marriage immigrants across this country and in these areas and summarizes the overall characteristics of these immigrants based on the previous studies. Chapter Ⅲ examines the present status of the Korean language education for the marriage immigrants in the Korean rural area. This chapter summaries the multi-cultural family support policies implemented by the government agencies to identify the Korean language education polices for the marriage immigrants and makes a general categorization of the overall Korean language education programs provided by the multi-cultural family support centers and the Ministry of Justice. In addition, this chapter discusses specific the operation of the Korean language education projects in the multi-cultural family centers these areas as the actual examples of the language education. Chapter Ⅳ investigates and analyzes the actual status of the Korean language education for these immigrants. This chapter introduces the study method and, based on the questionaries collected from the Korean language teachers and the marriage immigrants, summarizes and analyzes the opinions of the immigrants as the learners in the actual Korean language education and the opinions of the teachers. Chapter Ⅴ presents the two aspects of the improvement plans for the Korean language education for these immigrants based on the results of the survey in Chapter Ⅳ: the operation of the Korean language programs and government policies and the teaching and learning of the Korean languages. In regards to the operation of the Korean language programs and government policies, the following were suggested: securement of more than 160 hours of teaching per annum, provision of the classes in the agricultural off-seasons, support for the voluntary study groups, expansion of the educational opportunities, support for training of the Korean language teachers by geographical significance, and provision of the required courses of the Korean language. Regarding the teaching and learning of the Korean language, the following were suggested: the distribution of workbooks for self-study and the development of the textbooks suitable for the immigrants in the Korean rural areas. The significance of this study can be found in the fact that it collected the opinions of the marriage immigrants, teachers, and educational institutes and drew out the comprehensive improvement plans at a time when there are few studies on the Korean language education for these immigrants. I hope that the results of this study will contribute to the follow-up studies that help these immigrants settle down in their areas and foster them to become invaluable assets in their local communities.
