Marriage immigrant women in Korea society suffer from communication problems, economic difficulties and maladjustment, leading to low self-worth and several difficulties such as child rearing and education issues. Connected with educational needs of those of the marriage immigrant women, they suggest improvement of their Korean language skills and economic help by a development of their power. They also hope to restore self-esteem by sense of pride in herself and her own culture, and get enough ability to provide educational help to their children.
This study has the purpose of examining the effect of multicultural storytelling instructor program developed and applied for educational needs have in their Korean language, culture adaption, self-esteem, self capacity development and children’s educational capacity improvement.
Research problems for achieving the objective of this study are as follows. First, developing a multicultural storytelling instructor program for the marriage immigrant women. Second, appling the program to the site and qualify the effects in development of participants’ Korean capabilities, cultural adaptation and self-worth, self-capacity, and children education capabilities.
To solve the problem, analysis of marriage immigrant women’s educational need is done by literature research with examination of expert interview and existing education program for marriage immigrant women. As a result, the program that can strengthen cultural advantage and professional expertise of marriage immigrant women was found as necessary. Reflecting the need, program connecting the multicultural education with storytelling instructor license process is developed in the study.
The characteristics and contents of storytelling instructor program developed for marriage immigrant women are as follows. First, connecting multicultural education with storytelling instructor training course, a professional license(class 2,3), second, including marriage immigrant women’s self-ability development and vocational curriculum for exploration of career, third, reconstruction of storytelling instructor process reflecting marriage immigrant women’s characteristics, and fourth, reflecting multicultural education elements like ‘Wooly Bully’ in education contents.
So multicultural storytelling instructor program is applied for Kyonggi local marriage immigrant women, from 2015 March 23 to April 30, Monday through Friday, with total 120 hours over six weeks. The effects of marriage immigrant women’s Korean proficiency, cultural adaptation and self-worth, self capacity development, children education capabilities who participated in education are as follows.
First, Korean language ability emerged high as 4.5 points on average, in specific ‘literacy Improvement(4.62)’ was shown the highest improvement following ‘ability to talk(4.54)’, ‘confidence in Korean(4.46)’, ‘Korean communication capability(4.54)’. Second, result for cultural adaption in Korea suggest that with four types of cultural adaption(integration, segregation, isolation, marginalization), integration was found to be generally high to the average of 3.92, implying the education can help marriage immigrant women to adjust in Korea culture in desirable direction. Third, the result of survey related to self-respect appeared to be high with average 4.39, revealing multicultural storytelling instructor program has positive effect on participants’ formation of self-worth. Fourth, multicultural storytelling instructor program also appeared to be helpful in participants’ development of self-capacity and career pioneering. Fifth, the result of survey related to children education capacity showed that education capabilities appeared high with total average 4.47 in every single questionnaire, suggesting that the program has positive effect on children instruction and education by reinforcement of Korean language competence and education capability.
In sum, multicultural storytelling instructor program can help higher the marriage immigrant women’s Korean language, cultural adaption and self-esteem, and has positive effect on development of self-competence and capability of children’s education. So, by connecting multicultural education with storytelling process, this program is meaningful with higher ‘Korean language’, ‘culture adaptation and self-esteem’, ‘children education capacity’, and participants’ development of self-capacity and career exploration based on economic foundation by professional qualification process of storytelling instructor.
