A Study on Selection of Korean Words for Understanding Hallyu Videos
This study investigated how Korean language learners understand and enjoy Hallyu videos.
Preliminary results indicated that many respondents had a preconceived notion that the vocabulary they learned in class was different from the words used in Hallyu videos, which could make the meaning of the images incomprehensible. This study determined the validity of this claim by compiling vocabulary lists to understand expressions found in Hallyu videos.
The primary objective of this study was to provide Korean learning content for Hallyu-based learners to help them understand Korean videos.
This study was conducted in two parts. First, a comparison of the Korean vocabulary used in two Hallyu videos was compiled by extracting the all words. Then, existing educational word lists for beginner and intermediate level students were compared and contrasted one-by-one to determine the concordance rate.
The results had to meet the requirements of the spoken language’s coverage range; thus, the standard proportion was set to 80% to obtain statistics for the vocabulary.
These statistics revealed the number of words, the number of times the words were used, the inclusion ratio of beginner and intermediate level words, and the average value of each in the videos. In this study, the average value for the vocabulary of the two videos exceeded 80%, which met the requirement for the coverage range.
This proved that there were no differences between the vocabulary Korean language students learned in class and the words used in the Hallyu videos.
Second and based on the results of the first part of the research, a lexicon was selected. This was completed using the common vocabulary of the two videos and by adding words that are common in Korean vocabulary.
Additionally, the combined word list was arranged by taking into account the productivity of the vocabulary and the semantic field. The resulting lexicon for understanding Hallyu videos contained 5,082 words.
This study is significant for Hallyu-based learning because minimal research has been conducted on this topic in the Korean education field. Therefore, this study should help Hallyu-based learners understand Hallyu videos.
