The purpose of this study is to compare between Korean and Sinhala polite expressions. And it describes the use of some Korean and Sinhala polite expressions and strategies. Polite expressions are important for understanding the language, life style and culture of a specific society. And It also shows respect and manner as well as close relationships between each other by saving his or her face. Polite expressions and strategies are also necessary to ensure successful communication. Finally, this study aims to assist Sri Lankan students to communicate smoothly with korean native speakers . As there has not been any research on comparative study on Sinhala and Korean polite expressions written in korean before, this study will mark the beginning of linguistic comparison research between Korean and Sinhala politeness. Chapter 1 presents the necessity and purpose of this and reviews relevant previous researches. Chapter 2 explains the theories relating to this . It is required to assume the concept of politeness and look into system and principals of Korean and Sinhala Politeness. First, it describes some dictionary definitions of politeness. Through these dictionary definitions, Politeness is divided into two special categories. The first one is explicit polite expressions. And the other is implicit polite expressions. Korean has a - 111 - specific phenomenon based on Korean honorifics. Therefore explicit polite expressions are also able to describe in honorifics. Honorifics normally express moral accepts and manners in the politeness. But politeness can not be formed only honorifics. It has to work with strategic politeness in speech acts. We can express strategic politeness through the implicit polite expressions. Then chapter 2, widely describes Brown & Levinson’s strategies of politeness (1978, 1987), Face Threatening Acts (FTAs) threaten either speaker’s or hearer’s face positively or negatively. In Chapter 3, widely explains explicit polite expressions. It can describe through the Korean and Sinhala honorific expressions. It is also an grammatical expressions, which can describe in hearer’s age, social position etc. The Korean explicit polite expressions are divided into four special categories, honorifics of endings, honorifics of prefinal endings, honorifics of postpositions, honorifics of special words. Sinhala honorifics also can be devided into four categories like honofifics of postpositions, honorofics of suffix, honorofics in plural, honorofics of special words. Finally, in Chapter 3 explains the similarities and differences between Korean and Sinhala honorific expressions (explicit polite expressions). In Chapter 4, discusses implicit polite expressions of both language. implicit polite expressions is used strategically in order to indicate politeness by saving hearer’s face. The implicit polite expressions of both language have analyzed in speech acts in request, refusal, indicate an opinion, order, permission, propose and persuasion. And it have analyzed how the polite strategies operates in daily life conversations. Finally, in Chapter 4 explains the similarities and differences between Korean and Sinhala explicit polite expressions. In conclusion, this study will be helpful to Sri Lankan students achieve for the successful communication with korean native speakers.
