The aim of this study is to look into the necessity of training of Korean Language teachers in Singapore in order to enhance their professionality and to suggest the contents of their training plan. During the recent years, Korean Language education in Singapore has been rapidly developed and the number of teachers also has been increased substantially. However, study on integrated and practical plan of in-service training for those teachers has not been made yet. Hence, this study is to review the needs of in-service Korean Language teachers in Singapore and lay out necessary training plan for them accordingly.
Firstly, this study divided the area of Korean Language education in Singapore into groups according to its goal and target learners. And analyzed the present situation and looked into what professional elements are required for those teachers in each area. On the other hand, this study also considered teachers' development stages and applied it into Singapore Korean education situation. Focus Group Interview(FGI) was used as a method of this study in order to figure out what those teachers really needed in field. As a result, this study classified their needs whether it was based on their knowledge and teaching skills or on their belief and work ethic. This study also identified that teachers in field felt need of enhancement their professionality and they needed the relevant and integrated system and individual method accordingly.
Therefore, the contents of training plan for each area of Korean education in Singapore was created. This suggestion was made in 2 ways, one was based on the teachers' working organizations and the other was based on their teaching experiences. Each plan suggested what contents should be included in their training plan and what areas need to be emphasized for their professional career development.
This research is meaningful because not only it is an initial study on Korean Language teachers training in Singapore as a study object, but also it studied on teachers in most areas of Korean Language education in one whole country, Singapore. Teacher is an important factor for successful education and this study would be able to contribute for the further relevant studies in the future.
