The purpose of this study is to be preparing the development plan of integrated curriculum of Korean studies and Korean language in which foreign officials can acquire the work-related knowledge of korean studies including politics, economy, society, culture etc, and improve proficiency in Korean language for occupational purposes in order to effectively perform the work as a Korean expert.
Most of foreign officials engaged in the Korean affairs are required to acquire general knowledge of various areas of korean studies rather than special knowledge of the post-graduate level. Therefore, this study suggests ‘Korean Studies for foreign public officials’ to belong to middle steps between Korean language education and professional Korean studies, and to contain introductory and general-purpose materials. The details and results ot this study are stated below.
In the first chapter, the needs and purposes of the study as well as the objects and methods of it was addressed. The prior research of the study was reviewed through the studies related to Korean language for occupational purpose, diplomat and foreign public officials, as well as integrated curriculum of Korean studies and Korean language.
In the second chapter, theoretical background was examined through the details of Korean language for occupational purpose for foreign public officials, the concept of integrated curriculum of Korean studies and Korean language, and integrated curriculum based on content-based instruction and task-based language teaching.
In the third chapter, the problems of Korean language education for foreign public officials conducted at home and abroad have been identified through the review of the current Korean educational conditions. The United States, Japan, and China, concerned with Korean security actively cultivate public officials of Korean professionals. However, the problems of Korean education program for foreign public officials conducted at home universities and government agencies were derived from the short training period, the lacking connection with the Korean studies and Korean language, and the limitation of not departing from Korean language for general purpose.
In the fourth chapter, in-depth interviews and demand survey were conducted In order to provide integrated curriculum of Korean studies and Korean language for foreign public officials. Pre-depth individual interview results have confirmed that foreign public officials were able to acquire the work-related knowledge of korean studies and improve proficiency in Korean language for occupational purpose through the Korean studies courses, as well as they has widely used Korean studies knowledge in order to perform their tasks related to Korea. Demand survey has revealed that most of foreign public officials required Korean language training for work, Korean studies education of a variety of materials for work, and integrated curriculum of Korean studies and Korean language. Especially, it has expressed that intermediate and advanced learners had an interest in a variety of Korean studies materials and required more all the detailed subjects of Korean studies as well as the teaching methods of high degree of utilization and difficulty in tasks than elementary learners.
Finally in the fifth chapter, it was proposed integrated curriculum, based on such a demand survey analysis, that was more concentrated on introductory Korean studies to be able to acquire the work-related knowledge than Korean language. Also, it was proposed to be developed with the two steps of culture and deepening, and to be organically connected or integrated between inside class method such as lecture, discussion, audiovisual learning, presentation, creating s and reviews as well as outside class method such as interview, survey of material, field trips, experiential learning, and implementation of project. Teaching-learning model was proposed to focus on the process of prior lecture step → lecture step → posterior lecture step. After that, examples of real class was presented to adopt this teaching-learning model.
The significance of this study is that the integrated curriculum of introductory and general-purpose ‘Korean Studies for foreign public officials’ belonging to a middle step between Korean language and professional Korean studies, and basing on Korean language was suggested in order that foreign public officials with intermediate and advanced levels can acquire the work-related knowledge of korean studies, and improve their proficiency in Korean language for work. Futhermore this study was examined through the literature investigation research on present Korean educational conditions for foreign public officials, the pre-depth individual interviews and the demand survey of them.
