This study is to explore utilization of idiomatic expressions related to body parts in the field of Korean language education. The analysis on the total five of undergraduate textbooks and vocabulary books suggests solutions to problems presented by it as well as an effective way to teach body idioms.
Specifically, in the first section, looking at a preceding research on three research trends proves the necessity of the study.
The section 2 discusses morphological and syntactical features of body idioms by analyzing their concepts and characteristics. It also presents semantic features and the list of the idiomatic expressions by terms on body parts.
The final section examines how the body idioms the section 2 has introduced are expressed in Korean language textbooks. The examination on textbooks reveals three problems. Firstly, body idioms are not the same in 5 different textbooks. Secondly, the amount of learning is not decided by learners’ proficiency level. Finally, teaching does not help learners understand and express the third meaning of idioms.
In order to solve these problems, the article suggests appropriate learning amounts, a target list of body idioms, and three effective learning steps according to each level, such as beginning, intermediate, and advanced level. First of all, a learning list is referred to the Korean vocabulary list and the words list frequently used by Korean speakers. The list on idiomatic expressions of body parts consists of words appeared at least twice in Korean language textbooks, and they are classified into level categories according to the words’ difficulty and semantic transparency. In addition, it proposes step-by-step education following meaning delivery, confirmation practice, and integration activity.
Such given learning will lead learners to understand idiomatic expressions on the body terms and to develop their ability to use body idioms in appropriate situations. Hence, learners will communicate well and accomplish the ultimate purpose of foreign language education.
