Corpus-Based Research on Expressions of Intention in Korean for Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language
This study aims to analyze the context of situation where Korean expressions of intention ‘-으려고 하다’ (‘eu-ryeo-goh-ha-da’) and ‘-으려고요’ (‘eu-ryeo-go-yo’) are used and to compose authentic conversations for Korean textbooks based on these analyses. In order to find out how these are used based on situational contexts, we built a corpus of Korean native speakers and extracted these two expressions used in sentence ending expressions. Grammar is a very efficient tool for foreign language learners. These two expressions of intention from sentence-focused grammar are written in the Korean language textbooks in accurate sentences; however, they are not properly described from the discourse point of view that considers situational contexts. The text genre and settings in which these two expressions are often used, the participants’ information, and the meaning of speech act were analyzed to understand how they are used by actual Korean native speakers.
In the second chapter, the concept and components of conversational contexts were examined in addition to the syntactic and semantic characteristics of ‘-으려고 하다’ and ‘-으려고요.’
In the third chapter, a framework for analysis of conversational contexts was utilized and a corpus of actual conversations by Korean native speakers was built to extract the conversations where ‘-으려고 하다’ and ‘-으려고요’ were used. The extracted example sentences were subsequently analyzed based on the situational context variables. The modern spoken language corpus from the Sejong Corpus built as a national project and a TV series corpus built by the author were used together for the corpus in this study. To analyze the corpus, previous studies of the conversational context analysis frame were observed and the variables were accordingly set. The text genre, settings, the participants’ information, and the meaning of speech act were set as the large categories, and the conversational contexts of ‘-으려고 하다’ and ‘-으려고요’ were analyzed based on the variables. The analysis showed that ‘-으려고 하다’ appeared more frequently in lectures, presentations, and texts of TV talk shows in comparison to ‘-으려고요,’ and was mainly used in the ing patterns of speakers when suggesting a certain direction of their stories in one-on-many conversations. On the contrary, ‘-으려고요’ appeared in everyday life texts in overwhelmingly high proportions and was frequently used in one-on-one conversations where the first-person speaker was expressing his/her intentions and plans, or asking the listener about his/her intentions and plans.
In the fourth chapter, seven Korean textbooks from six educational institutions were analyzed and adapted based on the results of this analysis. In the Korean textbooks, there were some units in level 1 that suggested ‘-으려고 하다’ as a goal sentence, but ‘-으려고요’ was handled in only one textbook in a brief summary. The Korean textbooks focused on the ‘plan’ which was the basic meaning of ‘-으려고 하다’ and made ‘planning’ as the goal function. In one-on-one conversations of Korean native speakers, ‘-으려고요,’ which directly expresses the speaker’s intention, was used to talk about plans rather than ‘-으려고 하다,’ which has a stronger sense of formal ing. However, in the textbooks, ‘-으려고 하다’ was used in textbook conversations, composing conversations with low authenticity. The conversation texts in Korean textbooks form the core learning goals and a summary of communicative situations outside of the classroom for Korean learners. The conversations need to be proposed according to real life situations. ‘-으려고요’ should be used in texts rather than ‘-으려고 하다’ when asking about plans in one-on-one conversations, and we think that ‘-으려고요’ should also be used when asking about the listener’s plans.
In the fifth chapter, the study results up to this point were summarized and its limitations were discussed.
