The purpose of this research is to search for the educational methods of Korean language by using frequently used proverbs of the native speakers.
While proverbs are short, they are able to represent a country's sentiments, culture and history . Thus has a high educational value. As a result, proverbs have been used as a tool to learn foreign languages more effectively. The same principles apply when learning the Korean language. However, the education style of Korean language these days focus on using proverbs in conversations to solve the problems of our daily lives, rather than having deep conversations by using proverbs.
Therefore, we proceeded our research focusing on the Korean language education that uses proverbs to help students learn and use the Korean language with more depth and more preciseness.
For the research to continue, I looked at the characteristics and the educational value of proverbs and proposed an educational program that uses proverbs. First, I analyzed Korean language textbooks and Korean language test sheets to see which proverbs are being used in real life. Afterwards, I chose the proverbs that were being used the most from the information I have gathered and divided them to two classes, middle and high. With the new information I have gathered, I reviewed the problems related to proverbs that were released in the past 2 years in the TOPIK test and found out that there were proverbs that are not frequently used or not at all in the questions of the test. By seeing the results of the survey, I discussed that the proverbs should not be educated by mentioning it shortly but that the proverbs should be taught in an extra chapter. Doing this would reduce the gap between the Korean language students’ educational field and their real-life conversations. I proposed a planned educational program based on my research to be used in Korean language classes.
Through this research, I chose frequently used proverbs in conversations through surveys and proposed them to be reflected in Korean textbooks and the TOPIK test. Consequently, I give greater significance in searching for the educational methods of Korean language.
