Children of multicultural families are constantly increasing with increasing marriage-based immigrants. Korean government has enforced the diversity of education support policies for children of multicultural families, but they have difficulty in adapting to their school life and society due to a lack of language ability. Accordingly, this study was intended to examine a background, development aspects and status of Korean education policy for children of multicultural families and to present the problems and improvement direction of policy. Korean language education policy for children of multicultural families is legally based on the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and international treaties, focused on the Framework Act on Treatment of Foreigners Residing in the Republic of Korea and the Support for Multicultural Families Act. Through the Basic Plan for Immigration policy and action plans of central government and local governments established based on it, basic direction and detail tasks of Korean language education policy are suggested. Among many government ministries who have provided the education policy for children of multicultural families, the Ministry of Education has published the education support plan for students of multicultural families and has promoted various support projects based on it. Especially in 2012, the Ministry of Education presented the diversity of support tasks including the operation of a preparatory school and special class, the development and distribution of Korean language education materials, bilingual education by announcing 「strategies for advancement of multicultural student education」, and attempted to go into public education through KSL curriculum. However, as a result of examining the status of Korean language education policy for children of multicultural families, as problem, there were discordance between the propriety of the term for policy and the use of term, the lack of clear laws and regulations to support the enforcement of policy, an inefficient policy execution system, the problem of actual education which does not include the status of children of multicultural families, and the problem of education professionalism. To solve the problem of policy, the purpose and goal of Korean language education are clarified and then the improvement direction can be presented as follows. Policy term and relevant regulations must be constantly used by selecting the appropriate term which can cover children for policy based on wholeness, and the independent legislation pertaining to the multicultural education must be reviewed to support all of policies. For the enforcement of policy, the relevant ministries’ functions must be clarified to prevent waste of budget under the principle of efficiency and economy and the policy execution system must be enhanced to operate it efficiently by improving connectivity of multiculture-related functions in the ministries. KSL curriculum must be suggested in detail without difficulty in the actual execution after developing an individual program suitable for the type of children of multicultural families. Also, the professionalism of Korean language education must be improved by establishing the legal and institutional grounds for selection and assignment of KSL education teachers, and it must be actively utilized by developing the family literacy programs.
