The Literature Review section is a critically integral sub-genre of master’s theses and doctoral dissertations but little attention has been paid to it in recent times. The objective of this study is: (1) to analyze the rhetorical structure and the features of linguistic expressions of Literature Review in the master’s theses and doctoral dissertations in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language(hereafter referred to as “TKFL”), (2) to examine the differences between Literature Review written by native Korean speakers and the learners of Korean for Academic Purposes (hereafter referred to as “KAP”), and (3) to discuss the implications for KAP Academic Writing Instruction. Fifty Literature Reviews were selected in the field of TKFL; thirty Literature Reviews written by native Korean speakers (15 master’s theses; 15 doctoral dissertations) and twenty Literature Reviews written by KAP learners. The findings reveal that many of the Literature Review display five main “moves:” move 1 (establishing the background knowledge of the study-related theme); move 2 (ing previous studies); move 3 (evaluating previous studies); move 4 (the establishing justification) and move 5 (announcing the territory of the present study). First, move 1, “establishing the background knowledge of the study-related theme,” has three sub moves – presenting the study-related trend, stating the centrality of the theme and introducing the study-related fact or concepts. Second, move 2, “ing previous studies,” has nine sub moves – presenting the problems, motivations, topics, objectives, definition, subjects, methods, results and discussions of previous studies. Third, move 3 consists of eight sub moves – evaluating positively or negatively, presenting the writer’s interpretation, synthesizing and organizing, presenting the relevance, continuing a tradition, presenting pioneering aspects/uniqueness/unprecedented qualities, and presenting the characteristics. Fourth, move 4, “establishing justification,” has two sub moves – ‘indicating the gap’ and ‘centralizing the necessity of the present research’. Finally, move 5, “announcing the territory of the present study,” can be divided into five sub moves – announcing the objective, design and process, the definition, the difference and significance. Move 4, “establishing justification is independently classified and several new sub moves are also distinguished, which is a different approach from existing published works. Moreover, this study revealed the features of linguistic expressions such as formulaic expressions as well as ing verbs and tense and aspects in Literature Review. First, there are three kinds of formulaic expressions; the formulaic expressions as move structure markers, the sentence-final formulaic expressions and finally, lexical formulaic expressions. The formulaic expressions as move structure markers are used depending on what function the move performs. In this study, frequently used sentence-final formulaic expressions were revealed and classified to move and sub move and contrasted with sentence-final formulaic expressions for Korean for General Purposes. As a result, the sentence-final formulaic expressions for two purposes differed vastly. Lexical formulaic expressions include evaluative language, booster, and emotional markers. This study examined the function of ing verbs and they revealed the writer’s stance. The function of the tense and aspects was also examined in this . Based on the genre analyses of the native Korean speakers’ Literature Review, the KAP learners’ Literature Review were analyzed. As a result, some problems were revealed in the KAP learners’ Literature Review in the areas of rhetorical structure and linguistic expressions, thus academic writing education for KAP learners is found to be necessary for succeeding in the academic discourse community. The generalized structure model and the linguistic expressions such as formulaic expressions, ing verbs and tense and aspects in Literature Review in the field of TKFL would provide help to the KAP learners in writing their theses. From this study, one can also understand where they should focus on when writing Literature Review. Furthermore, the comparison between Literature Reviews written by native Korean speakers and KAP learners can be a guideline in thesis writing education. This is significant in that it investigates not only the rhetoric structure but also the features of linguistic expressions, which the latter has not been dealt with before. This study also fully covers structure and language, and can be directly applied in the field of TKFL. The result of this research can serve as a fundamental for the academic writing and will help the learners and teachers to write and teach Korean thesis or dissertation in more efficient manner.
