The purpose of this study was to evaluate how a single-parent female group counseling program affects depression, anxiety, and self-esteem using the NLP technique. The research hypothesis was established to achieve this research purpose. A NLP group counseling program will have a significant effect on the pre- and post-test of depression, anxiety, and self-esteem. To demonstrate the aforesaid research hypothesis such a program was constructed to deal with emotion, thought, belief, body, and future image in accordance with the characteristics of a single-parent. First, to deal with emotion included rapport formation with oneself, rapport formation with others, anchoring, and preferred representational system while to deal with negative emotion included a motion picture technique and anticipatory anxiety. And dealing with belief was programmed to have positive thoughts retained by dealing with an activated belief, to deal with the body through a body scan, and to deal with future image through a timeline. Most of single-parent females have the burden caused by raising their children due to the absence of their husbands by themselves and solving economic problems for themselves. Besidethis, they are faced with such problems that even their mental health is influenced by negative perception and bias from the society so they are anxious emotionally, helpless, in depressed status, under low self-esteem, thereby failing to adapt to society. Thus, the subjects of this study were single-parent females who suffered from economic, social, and mental problems. The research subjects were single-parent females who resided in the Y city and visited the Y center; the program promotion began from January 2015; among 45 females who wanted to participate in a group counseling by June 2015 an experimental group of 15 was comprised around those who scored high in the scales of depression, anxiety, and self-esteem in a pre-test; and the program began from July 2015. Except for participants who did not participated in the whole sessions throughout the program this study was conducted for 12 females fixed finally. For a measuring tool for depression in this study, the scale developed as CES-D(Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale), an integrated Korean version targeting adults and college students, was used after being modified and supplemented in the study of Kim Haeng-seop. And an anxiety scale was developed by Beck et al, according to the need of a new measuring tool distinguishing between anxiety and depression and was a self- questionnaire standardized in Korean by Yuk Sung-pil and Kim Jung-seul. A self-esteem scale was adapted by Jun Byung-jae with SES developed by Rosenberg and was a self- questionnaire of measuring the self-esteem, i.e. the degree of self-respect and the aspect of self-authorization. For the data collected in this study a paired t-test was conducted using a SPSS statistical analysis program to determine whether to reject a null hypothesis set to verify the effect of the NLP group counseling. Also we checked how much the subjects practiced what was taught in the previous session during a week every session, examined and analyzed the contents such as rating, sharing-thoughts and so on after completing the program, and received and analyzed carefully the evaluation questionnaire and satisfaction evaluation for the program from the participants to complement the limitations on the reliability given by the quantitative results as indicated by the statistical verification in the results of this study. Looking at the results of the study, first, the average scores in respect of the pre- and post-depression of single-parent females participating in the NLP group counseling became lower significantly as a result of examining the depression of single-parent females. Second, the average scores in respect of the pre- and post-anxiety of single-parent females participating in the NLP group counseling became lower significantly as a result of examining the anxiety of single-parent females participating in the NLP group counseling. Third, the average scores in respect of the pre- and post-self-esteem of single-parent females participating in the NLP group counseling became higher significantly as a result of examining the anxiety of single-parent females participating in the NLP group counseling. These findings indicate that the self-esteem of single-parent females improved through empathy, support and encouragement each other while they expressed all of their repressed feelings to each other in their same lives. And it seems that their depression and anxiety decreased while they loved, understood, and accept themselves as what they were. Further, the results suggest that it is important to realize their problem and the need of change, change themselves, and therefore improve even their abilities of internal control and personal relation in regulating their emotions, leading their lives, and further living matured lives other than living their lives affected by others.
