Using the sample of 56 high school students, this study examined the relationships among their meta-emotion philosophy, emotional abuse and neglect, and suicidal ideation. In specific, this study examined the levels and trends of emotional abuse and neglect perceived by adolescents, and the correlations among the three variables. Lastly, this study analyzed the mediating role of adolescents' meta-emotion philosophy on the relationship between emotional abuse and neglect and their suicide ideation. The measurements used in the study are included in the following: First, to measure emotional abuse and neglect, we used the ‘Childhood Emotional Abuse Scale’, which was developed by 고성혜(1992). The scale included 24 items measuring emotional abuse by 김인혜, 송현주(2014). Also, to measure the emotional neglect, we used the scale ‘Psychological Negligence’ developed by 고성혜(1992), 채혜정(1994), 홍은주(1998), which have formulated questions based on the Psychological Maltreatment in Children, Adolescent of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children(1995), and the standards suggested by the International Standing Committee on Child Abuse(ISCCA). The scale was modified and translated by 송미령(2006). Second, to measure the suicide ideation, we used the scale Suicidal Ideation(SSI), which was developed by Beck, Kovacs, & Weissman(1979) and adapted into the Korean language by 박광배, 신민섭(1991). Third, to measure adolescents' meta-emotion philosophy, we used the ‘Child and Adolescent Meta-Emotion Interview(CMEI)’, which was developed by Katz & Nelson(2002) and adapted into the Korean language by 남은영, 송수정(2013). The findings of this study are included in the following: First, this study examined the correlations among emotional abuse and neglect, suicide ideation, and adolescents' meta-emotion philosophy. First of all, as to relationships among the sub-areas of the meta-emotion philosophy, this study found that the emotional expressivity and regulation of adolescents were positively correlated with their emotional remediation. Moreover, their emotional awareness was negatively correlated with their emotional regulation. As to the relations between emotional abuse and neglect and suicide ideation, there existed a positive correlation between the level of the emotional abuse and neglect and the level of suicide ideation. As to the relationship between emotional abuse and neglect and adolescents' meta-emotion philosophy, there existed a negative correlation between the level of emotional abuse and neglect and emotional regulation. Lastly, as to the relationship between the adolescents' meta-emotion philosophy and suicide ideation, their existed a negative correlation between the level of the emotional regulation and the level of suicide ideation. Second, this study examined how the three variables influenced each other. First of all, as to the effect of emotional abuse and neglect on their suicide ideation, this study found that the emotional abuse and neglect positively affected the level of the suicide ideation. Next, as to the effect of emotional abuse and neglect on their meta-emotion philosophy, it was found that the higher the level of emotional abuse and neglect, the lower the level of emotional regulation. Lastly, as to the effect of adolescents' meta-emotion philosophy on their suicide ideation, this study found that the emotional regulation negatively affected the level of the suicide ideation. Third, this study examined the mediating role of adolescents' meta-emotion philosophy on the relationship between their emotional abuse and neglect and suicide ideation. The result indicated that there existed a complete mediation, where emotional abuse and neglect indirectly influences the level of suicide ideation through its effect on the mediator. This demonstrated that the adolescents' emotional regulations played an important role on reducing the level of suicide ideation directly. The contributions of this study are the following: First, this study overcame the weaknesses of the survey method by utilizing the interview method when measuring the adolescents' meta-emotion philosophy. Moreover, this study closely examined their emotional capability using ‘Child/Adolescent Meta-emotion philosophy’ developed by Katz and Nelson(2002). Second, Child abuse is a serious problem in the contemporary society that could lead one to be in detrimental situations, where involves suicidal attempts. This study found the overall tendency of emotional abuse and neglect experienced by adolescents. Lastly, this study found that the adolescents' meta-emotion philosophy had a significant influence on their emotional stability. In specific, the emotional regulation plays a significant role among the different areas of the meta-emotion philosophy. This means that the emotional regulation is a critical factor which can prevent adolescents' suicide ideation. These results are expected to be the basis of the emotional development program for adolescents who experience emotional abuse and neglect.
