현대사회는 지식정보사회의 도래와 함께 정보매체의 변화, 정보량의 급증하고 해마다 정보기술의 발달 등의 환경을 배경으로 빠르게 성장해 나가고 있다. 본 연구는 ｢韓國十進分類法｣의 발달과 변천과정을 살펴보고 第1版에서 第6版까지의 ｢韓國十進分類法｣의 助記性의 하나인 <特殊主題區分>의 細目 變遷을 硏究해 보았다. ｢韓國十進分類法｣의 판차별 변화의 차이와 확대된 분류 번호의 조합방법이 도입됨으로써 새로운 주제의 출현에 대한 분류체계의 대처능력이 도서관 사서들에게 꼭 필요한 업무 중의 하나이다. ｢韓國十進分類法｣ 第6版에서는 ‘<特殊主題區分>을 확대한다’ 라는 방침에 따라 特殊主題分野는 적극 개정되었다. 본 硏究는 ｢韓國十進分類法｣의 第6版에서 특수주제항목의 세목에서 이들의 조합방법을 통해 적용하고 변천과정을 고찰해본바 내용은 다음과 같다.
첫째, ｢韓國十進分類法｣第6版에서 <特殊主題區分表>를 略论하여 세분하였던 것을 적용하기전의 상태로 확장해 보았더니, 결과적으로 전체 분량의 370 페이지가 생략되어진 것을 볼 수 있었다. 많은 각계 전문가들의 학문의 경향을 반영한 것이고 시대의 흐름과 경제 가치를 생각해서 만들어진 것이라 여겨지며, ｢韓國十進分類法｣의 큰 장점이라고 할 수 있다.
둘째, 總類에서 특정계산법에 의한 일반 저작, 시스템분석, 설계, 구조, 성능, 평가, 처리방식 및 중앙처리장치, 기억장치, 접속 및 통신 주변장치, 특수전산기 시스템프로그래밍이나 프로그램, 시스템프로그래밍 운영시스템은 새로운 항목이 설정된 것을 볼 수 있다.
셋째, ｢韓國十進分類法｣ 第6版 社會科學에서 學問의 發展과 社會 變化의 반영, 시대가 변화되어 행정조직이나 사회의 구성이 세분화됨에 따른 전문성이 特殊主題區分의 변천에도 영향을 주었다.
넷째, ｢韓國十進分類法｣ 第6版 自然科學은 學問의 發展 常況을 반영하여 분류표의 실용성을 높이기 위해 특수주제구분의 조기성이 많이 적용되었다..
다섯째, ｢韓國十進分類法｣의 第6版의 技術科學은 크게 醫學, 農學, 工學 및 관련공학, 제조, 생활과학으로 구분할 수 있다. 주류를 구성하는 학문이 기술과학에 속하지만 아주 다양한 학문으로 구성되어 있으며｢韓國十進分類法｣에서 가장 방대한 주류이기 때문에 특수주제에 대한 적용도 본문에 보는 것같이 상당히 다양하다.
이상에서 본바와 같이 분류체계가 학문의 발전에 따라 확대 전개되고 있으며 , 주제의 세분화가 전개되고 상황에서 도서관 사서에게 주제에 대한 전문성을 키울 수 있으리라 기대된다. 그러나 이런 장점에도 불구하고 특수주제구분이 세분화되어 가고 개정의 과정에 따라 이치를 하게 된 것을 볼 수 있다. 그렇게 되면 도서관 안에서는 재분류를 하게 되고, 이용자 입장에서는 또한 자주 분류번호가 달라져 서가배열에 혼선을 가져올 수 있다는 문제점도 분명히 있다.
결론적으로 본 연구는 ｢韓國十進分類法｣의 學問의 特性과 發展過程을 살펴보고 ｢韓國十進分類法｣第1版에서 第6版까지 特殊主題의 共通細目(特殊主題區分)의 分類體系와 文獻分類表의 항목을 비교하여 변천과정을 살펴보았다. 그리고 대안점이나 개선사항은 살펴보지 못한 것이 본 연구의 미비점이라고 할 수 있지만, ｢韓國十進分類法｣ 助記性 중 特殊主題區分 硏究에 이바지 할 수 있으리라 기대하며, 앞으로 ｢韓國十進分類法｣의 개정작업시 기초자료로 활용될 수 있으리라 생각된다.

In keeping with the advent of knowledge and information age, our contemporary society is rapidly growing up owing to ever-changing information media, exponentially increasing information and ever-developing information technology year by year. This study focused on examining historical development and evolution of ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ and investigating itemized transition of “the Special Subdivision”, a part of ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ mnemonics, from Version 1 to 6. ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ has been changed in content along with each update of its version, and a further extended combination method of classification numbers has been introduced into South Korean libraries, so librarians are required to have a good ability to cope with classification system for advent of new Subdivision. ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ Ver. 6 is characterized by positive revision of special Subdivision fields according to a policy of ‘Extending Special Subdivision Divisions.’ This study applied itemized special topic divisions in Subdivision Ver. ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ 6 through said combination method of classification numbers, and examined the historical transition of special topic divisions. The results of examination can be summed up as follows:
First, we analyzed ‘the Special Subdivision’ in ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ Ver. 6 and extended its itemization back into previous form before the application of special topic divisions. As a result, it was found that 370 pages were omitted out of total content. It appears that the table reflects academic tendencies of many experts in every field, and is created with regard to contemporary trends and economic values, so it is a big advantage of ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣.
Secondly, it is found that general work based on certain calculation methods, system analysis, design, structure, performance, assessment, processing system, CPU (Central Processing Unit), memory, connection devices & communication peripherals, special computer system programming or program, and system programming OS (operating system) have been respectively newly itemized under the General Class of ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣.
Thirdly, Social Science in ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ Ver. 6 indicates that it reflects academic development and social changes, and the the Special Subdivision of ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ have evolved under the influence of expertise owing to further itemized administrative organizations or social compositions in keeping with historical transition.
Fourthly, it was found that Social Science in ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ Ver. 6 was characterized by significantly applied mnemonics of the Special Subdivision with a view to reflecting academic development trends and improving practicability of classification table in ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣.
Fifthly, Technical Science in ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ Ver. 6 may be subdivided broadly into medicine, agriculture, engineering & related science, manufacturing and living science. The mainstream of sciences belongs to technical science but encompasses a wide variety of academic fields. Moreover, it comprises the most extensive mainstream of categories in ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣, so it may have significant applications to special topics, as shown in the body of ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣.
As discussed above, the classification system of library has been further extended and developed in alignment with evolution of academic fields, and it is expected that latest situation of further itemized the Subdivision in ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ will help librarians build their expertise in various the Subdivision Despite these advantages, however, it is found that the Special Subdivision have been further itemized and have also accorded with each other according to revision procedure. It is clearly questionable that such itemization and accordance would cause re-classification works in library, so users could feel confused about bookshelf arrangement due to frequent changes of classification number.
Conclusively, this study examined the academic characteristics and historical evolution of ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣, and also compared the itemized classification schedule of ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ with the classification system of “common itemized sthe Special Subdivision” of ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣ ranging from Version 1 to 6, so that it could address the historical transition of classification system in ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣. This study falls short of discussion on possible alternative points or improvements, but it is expected that the findings of this study will contribute to follow-up researches on special topic divisions in regard to mnemonics of ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣, so it may be useful as a reference material for future revision works of ｢Korean Decimal Classification｣.
