The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate whether or not the pronunciation education influences students' perception of English pronunciation and further leads to the positive effect on students' pronunciation performance. To this end, I had planned to implement the pronunciation tests through listening specially focusing on the minimal pairs of English consonants such as /p, f/, /l, r/, and /s, ɵ/ in order to compare a gap between students' pre-test and post-test score. Moreover, I had observed if there was any positive change in students' pronunciation performance.
The general contents of the study are as follows. First of all, I conducted a preliminary survey of 20 Korean middle school students to figure out each student's educational background. After that I gave them a pre-test without providing any chances of learning the pronunciation of the target sounds in minimal pairs to check their current state of English pronunciation perception.
Secondly, I taught them how to pronounce the English consonants of /p, f/, /l, r/, and /s, ɵ/ by illustrating our speech organ and showing a video clip in which an English native speaker pronounces those consonants. Note that this thesis specifically used the minimal pairs of target consonants to help students understand the difference between /p/ vs /f/, /l/ vs /r/, and /s/ vs /ɵ/.
Third, I carried out the post-test after the pronunciation classes and compared the results of both pre-test and post-test. Next, I drew a conclusion from the results of comparison that pronunciation education triggers a great deal of positive effect on the students' perception of English pronunciation.
Finally, I did the post-survey after every test procedure finished in order to investigate the level of students' satisfaction. Given the results, the pronunciation education by minimal pairs brought positive emotional changes to students' recognition of importance of pronunciation learning, and further motivated them to study English again.
It is hoped that this case study will assist English teachers to accept the importance of pronunciation education and teach students the fundamental difference in the phonological system between English and Korean. In doing so students will successfully be able to communicate with accurate pronunciation, which reduces or gets rid of miscommunication.
