The purpose of this study is to develop a curriculum of Business Korean for Japanese learners of Korean Language as their second language. The curriculum that was developed focuses on combining language skills and the contents derived from content-Based Instruction with analysis of need surveys which were conducted with students who major in Korean Language in the university in Japan and interviews which were conducted with office employees.
The need of Korean speakers in Japanese companies and the number of young Japanese learners who want to use Korean at the workplace has been increasing because the investment of Japan in Korea is growing recently, Since the Korean language education in Japan is mainly for those who want to learn the language for general purposes and academic purposes, it doesn’t fulfill various demands of Korean learners. It is important to understand business cultures as well as the language in the working environment when using foreign languages due to more problems occurring through misunderstanding and troubles from the difference of cultures, working styles, and expectations than from the language itself. Therefore, it is necessary to teach both the contents of business and language skills in a curriculum for Business Korean. The research is presented in the following manner.
In chapter 1, the purpose and necessity of studying Korean for Business Purpose are described along with the scope and the method of this study by examining preceding studies.
In chapter 2, the concept of Korean for Business Purposes and Business Korean is defined by sorting out business Korean from Korean for Occupational Purposes. Also, it discusses the theoretical background of Content-Based Instruction focusing on its features and the necessity.
In chapter 3, the plans and purposes of education in Japan and the purpose and the direction towards foreign language education are presented. Furthermore, the history and a current situation of Korean education in Japan are described along with an analysis of a Korean Major Curriculum in Japanese universities.
In chapter 4, as a preliminary study, a needs survey was conducted with 147 students who major in Korean in colleges and 30 office employees who learn Korean for business purpose in Japan. Based on the preliminary study, another needs survey was conducted with 116 students who major in Korean a university. Along with this, interviews were conducted and analyzed with 6 Japanese office employees who work in branch offices of Korean companies and 5 workers who use Korean as a part of work in Japanese companies.
In chapter 5, the curriculum and the syllabus for Korean for Business Purposes are designed based on the results from the surveys and interviews. Also, an implementing model and a detailed lesson plan are presented according to the syllabus.
In chapter 6, the research is summarized and discusses its meaning, limitations, and suggestions.
This research is meaningful to design a curriculum and a syllabus based on contents based Business Korean for the Japanese learners of Korean language for the purpose of employment. The research could lead to the development of various curricula and textbooks containing contents as well as the language for the students who prepare for employment in the future.
