A Study on the Acquisition of Case Markers in Korean as a Third Language among the Mongolian Learners of Korean: With a focus on the effects of English as a second language

Korean education as a foreign language has gradually grown in size, actively promoting the diversity of its learners. Most Korean learners have an experience of studying English, the world's common language, as a foreign language, which makes Korean study as a foreign language one of third language study or more in most cases. This study thus set out to investigate the effects of English as a second language on the choice of case markers according to predicates when Mongolian learners of Korean studied the language as a third language based on those characteristics of Korean learners.
For that purpose, the study divided 44 subjects into a group that had an experience of learning English as a second language and one that had no such experiences before conducting an experiment. The investigator conducted the Grammaticality Judgment Test(GJT) for quantitative research and added a post-interview for qualitative research.
Chapter 1 reviewed the background and objective of the study, examined previous studies, and introduced the methodology of the study. Previous studies mainly focused on the usefulness of experiences with studying a language that was typologically similar to Korean for Korean acquisition as a third language, which was why the present study intended to investigate the impacts of experiences with learning a language that was not typologically similar to Korean on Korean acquisition as a third language. That is, the study examined the effects of second language on Mongolian learners of Korean whose first language was Mongolian when they studied English first as a second language.
Chapter 2 reviewed the theoretical background of third language acquisition. After defining the concept of third language as a language to be studied in the third order, the chapter examined four hypotheses dealt with importantly in third languages. The hypotheses were classified according to the acquisition order and typological or item similarity.
Chapter 3 specifically addressed the subjects, procedures, and tools set for the research to check the patterns of transfer of English as a second language on Korean acquisition as a third language in an experiment.
Chapter 4 presented the experiment results, analyzed them statistically, and discussed the research question mentioned in Chapter 1 based on the analysis results.
Chapter 5 summarized the overall content and discussions and covered the implications and limitations of the study.
