Under the trend of globalization, more and more communications between different countries emerge. In this trend, Korea demonstrates its special aspect to the world with its own unique cultural characteristics. Films and TV programs play an essential role in this process, as not only the media people get know with Korea by, but also the materials the Korean learners could refer to.
Since 1993, when China established diplomatic relations with Korea, a large number of outstanding films and TV programs had been introduced from Korea to China. In recent years, more and more people chose to enjoy the Korean films and TV programs on the Internet instead of the TV set. The subtitle groups are regarded as having promoted this variation. Beholding the idea “free, sharing, communication, knowledge ”, the subtitle groups translate Korean films and TV programs for Chinese people. However, it is their unprofessional translations that frequently make mistakes in the subtitles. This thesis will investigate the Chinese translation from two respects: the translation of the title and the translation of the actors’ lines. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the translation principles, to pinpoint the problems of the translation, and therefore to propose the better translation. Moreover this thesis will study the Korean language teaching by Korean films and TV programs in the class and for self-study.
Literal translation, liberal translation, transliteration and recreation are adopted in the translation of titles. Certain simple English phrase can be remained without translating. The problems refer to the different versions of the same title and the incorrect translations. The subtitle groups and the professional translators gave different translations and the people in different palces gave different translations, and the mistakes can be frequently found in the titles due to all of these. Sometimes, the incomplete knowledge of the film may lead to incorrect translations.
Literal translation and liberal translation are mainly used in the translation of actors’ lines. In order to fulfill Chinese audience, these two methods are flexibly used . Problems in the translation of actors’ lines are the incorrect translations of language and the incorrect translations of culture. That means the translators made linguistic mistakes due to their proficient Korean and gave incorrect translations of culture due to their misunderstanding of Korean culture.
In the last part of the thesis, the mode to teach Korean will be demonstrated, which is designed to help Chinese learners to learn the contents. And analysis on the self-learning outside the classroom will be conducted by different phases.
Korean films and TV programs not only give Chinese people a chance to know Korea and also provide them materials to learn Korean language. Therefore, accurate translation of subtitles are quite important. We look forward to that more and more translation in Korean films and TV programs will be flexibly used in Korean language teaching
