A Contrastive Study on Korean and Chinese Idiomatic Expressions: Focusing on Korean phrasal idioms with highly frequent use
The purpose of this study is to compare and classify Korean and Chinese idiomatic expressions into categories according to semantic standards in terms of Korean language education as a foreign language. Idiomatic expressions in this study are limited only to phrasal idioms. There are various linguistic forms that reflect cultural aspects and, among them, idiomatic expressions expose linguistic nature and way of thoughts comparatively widely. Idiomatic expressions become one of the greatest stumbling blocks for foreigners in acquiring languages of different countries. Therefore, this study ultimately aims to help Chinese in learning idiomatic expression in Korean language.
Chapter II establishes categories which this study tries to deal with by looking into the concept of idiomatic expression. In order to construct one-on-one corresponding relationship between Korean and Chinese language for comparative study, this study used the concept 'phrasal idiomatic expression' in comparison study. Study selected corresponding list of idiomatic expressions between Korean and Chinese language by choosing conformity of idiomatic meaning and uniformity of word structure as basic standard of comparison among various standards of comparison. Selected Korean-Chinese idiomatic expression pairs were largely classified into idiomatic expressions commonly appearing in both Korean and Chinese and idiomatic expressions existing only in Korean.
Chapter III makes comparison analysis on the meanings of the idiomatic expressions of Korean and Chinese language in 2 stages. The 1st stage, analysis in meaning, judges with what meaning each word contributes to idiomatic meaning by investigating and comparatively analyzing basic meanings and derivative meanings of constituting words. Then, the 2nd stage, description on patterns of combination forms and creation of meanings, describes combination forms of idiomatic expressions according to the result of judgment made in the 1st stage on with what meaning each word contributes to idiomatic meaning. In addition, examining and comparing the patterns of the creation of meaning of idiomatic expression, the 2nd stage also explains how those meanings are related.
This study has its meaning in that it practically makes comparative analysis on Korean and Chinese idiomatic expressions and, as the result, tries to extend help to the Chinese learners of Korean language. It is deemed desirable to provide basic data for excellent translation, theoretical foundation of Korean language education as a foreign language and basic principles of publishing dictionary with this kind of studies.
