As more immigrants are flowing into Korea from various national backgrounds, Korea is changing from a homogeneous into a multi-cultural country. The population of multicultural families is increasing as well as their children. The opportunity to interact with teenagers from international backgrounds can give positive effects, but there are negative impacts to consider as well. Because of their influent accents and foreign appearances, those teenagers are frequently being treated as an outcast and that leads to them to quit school. It is urgently needed that the other students learn the importance of harmony and coexistence, and most importantly the perception towards multicultural teenagers needs to improve.
The multicultural education for multicultural teenagers focuses on the Korean language and Korean culture so they can become accustomed more easily. The education for conventional students included experiencing foreign cultures and art. There are not enough opportunities for the students to learn the distinct characteristic of Korea’s multicultural society. The education to resolve discrimination and fixed stereotypes in Korea’s multicultural society is urgently needed.
The necessary attitudes to develop multicultural acceptability are respect, sympathy, understanding, and cultural relativism. A combined and integrated course will be more effective than a conventional lecture course. To derive these concepts, the learner will experience a more meaningful change through expressive activities in an art course than theoretically learning them in an ethics course. This study selected the subject of “creating a calligraphy advertisement to develop multicultural acceptability.” The main goal is to improve the multicultural acceptability by creating a combined course of art and ethics and to verify the effects among middle school students.
First the necessity and significance of this combined course will be examined. And how to approach this in a middle school’s art class will be studied as well. Based on this theoretical background a course unit was selected, and using the Webbed model a combined course was designed with a Problem Based Learning model.
In “D” Middle School located in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, two classes were selected as the test subject. The experimental group and control group were 35 students each, and an equivalence check was performed by conducting a survey on multicultural acceptability. The experimental group participated in 8 sessions of a combined course and the control group participated in 6 sessions of a conventional art class, and after that the multicultural acceptability was examined.
Statistically usable data was analyzed using the SPSS ver.21.0 statistical package program. The results of the performance tests and the evaluation forms were decided by a qualitative analysis. The summary of the results are as below.
First, the experimental group with combined courses showed a more positive change in multicultural acceptability than the control group with conventional art courses.
Second, the experimental group achieved higher results than the control group in the formative evaluations.
Third, after the qualitative analysis of the performance tests the experimental group achieved higher results in the areas of “theme expression”, “expression method”, and “formative element and principle”.
Fourth, after analyzing the written evaluation forms the experimental group showed more practical ethics in a multicultural society than the control group.
Fifth, the experimental group’s self-evaluations regarding the combined course showed positive feedbacks in learning interest, satisfaction, usefulness, and enjoyment.
In conclusion, this study has significance in verifying the positive effects of a combined course of art and ethics and how it was helpful towards middle school students’ attitude about a multicultural society. Hopefully in the future there will be more programs developed in this same aspect.
