The Contrastive Study On The Cognitive Meaning Of Korean ‘Kata’ and Vietnamese ‘Đi’
There are many languages that contain an enormous amount of multiple meaning words. Clearly understanding their meaning in each conversation is significantly important to foreign language learners. Researching on polysemy has become the subject of great interest in the language lexicography, especially in education. Recently, polysemy has been also a semantic point of view in research studies. This research aims to study the similarities and differences of the prototype meaning and extended meaning between two verbs ‘Kata’ in Korean and ‘Đi’ in Vietnamese on cognitive linguistics. The entire contents of the study have six chapters as follows.
Chapter I presents the purpose of this study, the excitements and the issues that this research would explore by reviewing preliminary studies on ‘Kata’.
Chapter Ⅱ refers theoretical backgrounds from four points of view; acquisition of a polysemy word, the principle, the reason and the condition of the extended meaning. these theoretical background prepare the groundwork for the study.
Chapter Ⅲ is a meaning comparison between ‘Kata’ in Korean Dictionary and ‘Đi’ in Vietnamese Dictionary. The results shows that both ‘Kata’ and ‘Đi’ have nine meaning in common. However, ‘Kata’ has totally twenty-one different meanings while Đi’ has 9 different meanings.
Chapter Ⅳ is an important part of this research, which inspect and contrast the prototype meaning and extended meaning between two verbs ‘Kata’ and ‘Đi’. First of all, ‘Kata’ and Đi’ has all prototype meaning of ‘ People move from one place to one another place’ and draw a picture about the prototype meaning of ‘Kata’ and Đi’. It presents the similarities and differences between extended meaning of both two verbs. Basically, ‘moving of space’, ‘moving of time’ and ‘moving of abstraction’ were presented by Chi-ryong Im in 1997 as there extended meaning. In the process of analyzing the extended meaning of both of both words, the extension mechanisms were mainly found to be derived by means of metaphor of each object. The differences about extended meaning are caused by multiple factors, especially by the difference of thoughts, and cultural and social history between two countries.
Chapter Ⅴ examines the meaning of ‘Kata’ and ‘Đi’ as an auxiliary verb. 'Kata' and ‘Đi’ has all "Duration of action" as an auxiliary verb. In Vietnamese, when ‘Đi’ is written behind an other verb, it shows a command meaning and when ‘Đi’ is written behind an other adjective, it shows admiration meaning but ‘Kata’ has not shown this meaning. In Korean, when ‘Kata’ is written behind an other verb, Its shows ‘repetition of the operation’ but ‘Đi’ has not shown this meaning.
Finally, Chapter Ⅵ presented the significance and limitations that this study will provide for future research.
Through this study, learner will understand more about the polysemy of ‘Kata’ and ‘Đi’ and also use them correctly. Moreover, when studying an another, leaner not only learn how to use the language, but also the culture, history, and people thoughts of the countries using that language. This sis the first researching project and it could be considered as a first step on the way of studying the polysemy of words between tow languages.
