A Study on the Meanings of Auxiliary Particles ‘ ?(i)na, -(i)rado, -(i)nama’. This study aims to establish a criterion for determining the interchangeability of these three terms. ‘?(i)na’, ‘-(i)rado’, and ‘-(i)nama’ are known as synonymous relation particles. In common usage, these particles may have similar meanings, but they can be used to express diverse feelings. However it is extremely difficult for second language learners of Korean to distinguish the differences among them. Many of those learners make a great effort to avoid using them, rather than using them improperly. Therefore, the criterion of this study sets out to classify the meanings of these three particles and the degree to which they can be substituted for one another. All examples and meanings in 6 dictionaries are carefully compared so as to be categorized and rearranged. To be more clear about the reclassification of their meanings, a survey to find the degree of similarity between ‘ ?(i)na’ and ‘-(i)rado’ / ‘-(i)rado’, and ‘-(i)nama’/ ‘?(i)na’, and ‘-(i)nama’ was administered to 70 Korean people. According to the results, there are certain equivalences. ‘?(i)na’ and ‘-(i)rado’ could be substituted for each other in three cases, and ‘-(i)rado’, and ‘-(i)nama’ also could be replaced with each other in one case. However there was not any degree of similarity of substitution between ‘?(i)na’, and ‘-(i)nama’ in discourse. Based on these results, this study displays the common semantic relations of these particles in diagram form.
