Recently, multi-cultural families have rapidly increased in Korea due to international marrige and foreign immigrant women are mainly Asian such as Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Thailand, and Philippines. In particular, Chinese and Vietnamese women are higher proportion and this growing trend may keep for a while.
This study examined multicultural Vietnamese and Chinese immigrant women’s ariculation accuracy and phonologica process with Urimal test of articulation and phonology (U-TAP) compared with Korean women. A Total of 37 multicultural immigrant women (22 Vietnamese, 15 Chinese) and 30 age- matched native Korean women participated in this study. Results demonstrated that the multicultural immigrant women’s accuracies of vowels and consonants were significantly lower than those of native Korean women. On the other hand, there were no differences in accuracy of vowels and consonants between Vietnamese and Chinese women groups. However, Chinese women presented significantly lower accuracy than Vietnamese in place of consonants.
In multicultrual immigrant women, bilabials and glottal sounds presented the highest accuracy in place of consonants followed by palatal, alveolar, velar sounds while accuracy of plosives was highest followed by nasals and liquids in the manner of consonants. There were no differences in phonation types and manner of consonants between Chinese and Vietnamese women.
For phonological process, significantly higher frequency of the omit of final consonant was observed in Chinese than Vietnamese women. Additionally, significantly higher frequency of the omit of velar consonants in Chinese than Vietnamese women. Furthermore, Chinese women demonstrated significantly higher frequency of liquidization while higher aspiration was observed in Vietnamese women.
From these results, multicultural women presented articulation errors and various phonological process patterns depends on their home languages. These data was very useful to help the Korean articulatory and phonological education for multicultural immigrant women.
