Based on previous studies arguing that the biggest reason for elementary school children from multi-cultural families to have difficulty adjusting to school and society is their lack of communication skills in Korean, this study aims to select and rate the list of derivational suffixes for Korean language education to teach those children effectively. To achieve this aim, the present study extracted 248 derivational suffixes from 811,225 words in the corpora of elementary school textbooks, 2,913 vocabularies for elementary school students in the Korean language education curriculum, and 18,385 words in the corpora of the two types of Korean language textbooks for multi-cultural families and selected 127 derivational suffixes for Korean language education according to several criteria such as 'appearance frequency', 'productivity', and 'difficulty'. Adding the criterion of 'appearance range' to these criteria, this research rated the selected derivational suffixes according to each criterion and presented an integrated rating list in 13 ratings by applying every criterion in an integrated way.
The greatest contribution of the findings of this study is that the list and sequence of derivational suffixes to be taught to elementary school children from multi-cultural families were offered. The lack of research into the education of derivational suffixes for multi-cultural families in the past suggests that this research can lay the foundation in the field of Korean language education for multi-cultural families. Furthermore, as derivational suffixes combine with roots of words to form derivatives, the results of this study will greatly influence the rating of derivatives and the order of education. Besides, since this study provided the rating list using a number of criteria, it will be possible to select the rating list according to the needs or objectives of educators and learners. The integrated rating was divided into as many as 13 ratings, which appears to help find ratings precisely suited to the level of learners. Thus, it will serve as a more useful and practical material.
The detailed contents of this study are as follows.
Chapter 1 stated the reasons for conducting research for selecting and rating derivational suffixes for Korean language education for elementary school children from multi-cultural families, reviewed previous studies in this area, and presented research subjects and research methods.
Chapter 2 described the concepts and measurement methods of the criteria for selecting and rating derivational suffixes for Korean language education for elementary school children from multi-cultural families including 'appearance frequency', 'productivity', 'difficulty' and 'appearance range'.
Chapter 3 looked at the process of selecting derivational suffixes for Korean language education for elementary school children from multi-cultural families and categorized the selection results of the process.
Chapter 4 rated derivational suffixes for Korean language education for elementary school children from multi-cultural families selected in Chapter 3 on the basis of the scores decided by each criteria and integrated the results to provide the integrated rating list.
