A Study on Education Plan for Improvement of
Korean Speaking Fluency Utilizing Shadowing

The aim of this research is to investigate and construct a Korean fluency development plan for students who study Korean as second language to improve their fluency speaking utilizing Shadowing. The effect of Shadowing on fluency speaking improvement were reviewed and examined after conducting Shadowing learning to Hong Kong learners.
First of all, effectiveness of Shadowing learning were reviewed after gathering and comprehending the composition of elements and concept of fluency speaking through examining the theoretical background of Shadowing learning. Also, a questionnaire research on the present condition and educational necessity of fluency speaking were carried out, formulating the fundamentals and learning model that can be used for construct a learning method utilizing Shadowing. In order to apply on practical lesson, Hong Kong learners, learning material, teaching guidance were prepared and 10 rounds of Shadowing learning class were conducted. Afterwards, an evaluated audio data were collected through task activities to analyze the incremental fluency improvement. Searching of meaningfulness of fluency speaking and utilization plan of Shadowing learning are to be presented through these research. The research will be presented in the following manner.
In the first chapter, the needs and purposes of the study as well as the preceding research and its procedures and progress was addressed.
In the second chapter, the review of theoretical background and the concept of fluency speaking was abstracted. In this research, fluency speaking is considered to be the general ability of the process of vocal expression of a native speaker. The composition element includes accurate pronunciation, natural accent, appropriate speed of speech, speech with pause and overall rhythmical speaking.
In the third chapter, a questionnaire survey was carried out targeting Hong Kong learners covering the present learning environment of Korean fluency, the need and cognition of Shadowing learning.
In the fourth chapter, design and constructing of teaching and learning method through Shadowing for fluency speaking improvement was formulated. To do this, 7 learning fundamentals were being proposed such as task-based activity, learner-focused activity, process-based Shadowing activity, interaction between teacher and learner, cultivation of communicative competence under colloquial situation, individual error modification, knowledge of cultural background sharing to formulate teaching and learning model. In order to apply these learning fundamentals on practical lesson and to review effectiveness of Shadowing, 10 rounds of Shadowing lessons were conducted to 10 Hong Kong learners after formulating target learner, learning materials, teaching guidance as well as preparation of learner’s audio data of “voice reading” and “summary speaking” under composition of class task activity.
In the fifth chapter, incremental changes of fluency through evaluation and analysis of learner’s audio data has been reviewed. After analyzing “voice reading”, the result showed that the learner’s speed of speech has steadily improved to become close to that of the original audio data and that the frequency of pronunciation error has decreased gradually. Also, after comparing the different aspects of accent, speaking with pause, overall speech rhythm of the original audio data and learner’s audio recorded data through voice curve analysis of Pratt program, the difference gap has narrowed as more Shadowing learning was carried out.
Although the main evaluation of another task activity of “summary speaking” was done by an assessment group comprising of 3 teachers on impression evaluation, the result of the evaluation was reinforced by including assessment of learner’s speed of speech, pronunciation error, speech error, repeat, hesitation on a separate basis.
As for the impression evaluation result, learner’s fluency score has increased gradually as number of class progressed and each aspect of speed of speech, speech error, pronunciation error, repeat, hesitation has also shown incremental improvement.
An in-depth attitude survey was also carried out along with the evaluation of Shadowing learning. The learners were able to repeat Shadowing learning amusingly with experiencing an actual improvement and have shown willingness to continue Shadowing learning in their class activity or self-study.
3 types of educational method that can be applied to an actual educational environment are being proposed after concluding meaningful improvement on fluency speaking.
First is the use of learning model utilizing 60 minutes of a separate time during Korean curriculum suggested in chapter 4.
Second is the use of class activity during practise phase of a Korean consolidation class. By Shadowing the target vocabulary and learning expression in an essential paragraph or text content according to class progress, the extension of practising accurate pronunciation, accent, speaking with pause, rhythmical speaking of that of a native Korean can be carried out.
Last is the use of self-study session. Learners to carry out Shadowing learning of task activities such as “voice reading” and “summary speaking” that are related to reading and listening contents of the class. Teacher to provide feedback on learner’s audio data, maintaining positive interaction to encourage and guide them to carry out a proper self-study practice.
Finally in the sixth chapter, a summary of the results of the research is presented along with an analysis of the potential limitations of the study.
